Beneath a Steel Sky is a classic point and click adventure originally released in 1994 by Revolution Software. More recently it was made freeware and became part of the ScummVM supported games. This is a port of the game from ScummVM to Scratch!

I have managed to get the wrench, however when you take it out of your backpack, the image you get is NOT that of a wrench but a mixed up message.

Aha! That's the “blank template” icon that you're seeing. Looks like I haven't brought the costume over for the spanner yet. I'll try to get that sorted this evening and hopefully squeeze some more of the adventure into the project while I'm at it…

I'm glad you're enjoying it. Unfortunately I think you've only copied the part of the save-game code that was on the screen. You need to double click the save code and then copy it to your clipboard. I'll update the in-game instructions. The codes are 1000+ characters long (which sounds a lot but is much better than the 100000+ characters that they were originally!)

I was playing the hi-res version, had just got past the furnace, was on the level outside and, having spoken to the old geezer, went to talk to the security guard. At that point the screen went completely white!

And I thought that I was doing so well too…

Oh dear… that's a spoiler on multiple levels! I'll look into it this evening as everything on that level should work fine. Sorry about that.

That's fixed now. The guard seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis and appearing as Joey whenever he should be doing his “look at watch” animation but, other than that, he's working fine now. I've seen a few animation glitches and palette errors around that level but hopefully no more crashes…

Ah, not so much a glitch as a “you've reached the end of what I've completed so far” issue I reached an interesting point where it would be easy to add the entire game now as the scripting is all done but… there's just not enough room in the JSON to do that. I seem to be walking a precarious tightrope between cramming more game in and it not working on a lot of machines due to RAM issues. If there's a clear cut point in the game where the player isn't able to go backwards then I might try splitting it up. It would have to be at a point where the player could no longer go back to previous scenes though so I don't know if it's feasible yet.

have you tried reusing assets, or is there anything you can delete? (I don't know what you've done so I don't know wether any of that is possible)

Assets are being reused and non-used assets have been removed from the project. I've also got text and data compression going on, initialising lists from variables to reduce JSON size, etc. The issue with RAM is due to Scratch expanding jpeg images at load time. There are thousands of costumes which are comfortable as compressed JPEG images but if they're all expanded at once it just explodes computers with insufficient RAM. Also, there's very little space left of the 5MB JSON. I can squeeze more of the game in but then it loads on less computers and I don't really want that. To give you an idea, there are approximately 9000 costumes left to add for the full game! I'm pretty much resigned to breaking it up into two (or maybe three) games if there are suitable points to do so

It seems to work on most computers now but it is a very resource-hungry game with thousands of costumes, a full musical score, etc. Try shutting closing all other browser tabs, apps, etc. and see if you have more luck that way. Fingers crossed
