An unpopular scratcher bar!

Hello scratch team! My idea is that this bar will be on the front page under the FPC bar. It would kinda be like FPC but the scratch team would choose what projects will go there. Also there will be some requirements,
  • never been featured, topped loved or remixed
    have under 500 followers
Always follow the community guidelines and have never been reported
Have been active on scratch in the last week
have only been curated 3 times or under

This is a great idea for scratchers that are unpopular but there isn't the best project to be featured. It would work like the feature bar, but instead of 20 projects at a time there will be 10. I hope you take this idea into consideration! If you have any questions feel free to ask me!

How will we know which projects to put there? Will other Scratchers propose them somehow? Because if so, this is almost sounding like the “Featured” tab but with a lot more restrictions on what will be chosen.

Not sure if that's what you were going for or not.

I mean I guess! That would be cool!

In that case, I guess my point is that the “unpopular Scratcher” tab is basically the exact same as the “Featured” tab, but it's even harder to get on (and many complain that “Featured” is already hard enough to get on — especially considering there are no follower restrictions or front-page restrictions).

But I wonder what other people would think about this.

here's my cue

I personally think it's a lot more rewarding to get to know people, be active in the community, and generally be pleasant, and get known that way, rather than just getting front-paged.
One way you get to experience a lot of fun, and the other just a short influx of activity.

not quite, in the possible dupe it is talking about users, and this topic is about projects.

P.S.

What do you mean? I'm confused
a duplicate on the Scratch Suggestion forums is a topic that has the same idea, but your isn't quite a duplicate of that one.

Oops, I thought it was about featuring Scratchers, not projects. My bad.

I think this would be a problem. If I report a comment of yours that says “Great project”, then you would immediately be ineligible for this tab?

Getting reported is different from getting alerted — I think you meant getting alerted.

I think this suggestion aims to fix an issue with the Featured tab (and a number of others, such as “What the Community is* Loving”), which is as follows: there's a positive feedback loop with regard to featuring/frontpaging: popular Scratchers get noticed more, which means that their projects get suggested to be featured more, which means that they get more famous… and so on. (I'm admittedly not too familiar with how the featuring process works.)

Granted, I just found the suggestions-to-be-featured studio, and it does have the guideline that suggestions should be “projects by people who haven’t been on the front page a lot already”, but considering lots of people have “featured 5x” or the like on their profiles, “a lot” is quite subjective.

Having a front-page section specifically for less popular/well-known Scratchers would help to ameliorate this problem.

With that in mind, I have a few suggestions for the OP, as follows–

Of course, we should change this to “alerted”. However, as a believer in second chances, I find “never” to be a bit strict, particularly because people – especially in the age groups Scratch caters to – make mistakes. I'd up the number, but I leave that number-upping to the Scratch Team.

swim1016 wrote:

Have been active on scratch in the last week
I think “frequently active” or “in the last month/two weeks” would work better, as some people have to be absent for a few weeks or a month but are generally active, and this shouldn't disqualify them. “In the last week” is a bit excessive/demanding.

swim1016 wrote:

I'm not sure whether we're talking about features or curations/FPCings any more. I'd replace “curated” here with “front-paged”; whether we should include “What the Community Is Loving/Remixing” in “front-paged” would be left up to the Scratch Team's discretion as well. At any rate, I think “3 times” is too much, and 2 times perhaps too much as well.

“Have only been curated once before” might work and could lead to the catchy acronyms “COB” (Curated Once Before) or “STF” (Second Time Featured/Front-Paged). “Have never been curated before” might work even better and could be abbreviated to “NCB” (Never Curated Before), “FFP” (First Front-Page), or something of the like.

Ultimately, I kind of support this; I'd like to see amendments, but the idea seems to be a fundamentally good one!

* Footnote: “Is” should be capitalized, but it isn't capitalized on the front page! :(

Perhaps this could be an automagic thing in the Explore tab - instead of just most recent, it's projects that have had some traction, but not much and the creators meet those criteria. It would allow you to find some hidden gems, eh

How about the restriction be “160 followers or less.” That would seem more fair.

This seems a bit harsh, because someone could sabotage someone else by randomly reporting them, and some people, like me, have broken the community guidelines because their older sibling posted something on their account.

Not an excuse. You should focus on account security and definitely tell a parent if they continue. That exact behaviour was done by the younger brother of a moderator in a MMO I used to play. He stole some of the most valuable items in the game and got his older sibling both demoted and banned from 2 years (plus they had to perform a 24 hour rollback of the game due to the damage caused). People who are willing to vandalise other peoples account will continue to do so, until they realise they've really messed up this time.

Ok but seriously, I was on my computer when they reached over and typed something.
I even explained it was a mistake, but of COURSE my other older brother deleted the evidence![/offtopic rant about my mean older brothers]
