Covers that are better than the original?
I saw this topic and immediately thought of the Marilyn Manson version of “Tainted Love”. the coil version of “tainted love” is better than the soft cell version but i don't think i could choose between the coil version and the original gloria jones version!

You should really look up a Youtuber called Hollymaezers. For those of you who watch the voice, She's Holly Henry. For those of you who don't care, just watch one anyway!!!!!!!

Steve Miller Band's “Jet Airliner,” originally by Paul Pena. I don't know if this counts though, since the origanl version wasn't actually released until 2000.

Covers that are better than the original?
Here's what I can think of for now:
You Really Got Me - Oingo Boingo (original by The Kinks) - Don't get me wrong, the original is a classic. However, I'm a fan of Oingo Boingo's demented ska/new wave sound and this is awash with it, so I'm inherently more attracted to this. I love the use of talk box in this as well.
Solsbury Hill - Erasure (original by Peter Gabriel) - I know it's tacky to take such an organic art-rock staple and turn it into a 4/4 electronic dance tune, but I feel like this fleshes out the arrangement more (particularly the “boom, boom, boom” part, I can't hear the original without wishing it was accentuated like it is in this version). I also feel more sincerity from Andy Bell's vocals here for some reason.
Day Tripper - Yellow Magic Orchestra (original by The Beatles) - Bias alert: I was actually completely unaware this was a Beatles song for quite a while (it took a while for me to look into the Beatles, okay?) and thought it was a YMO original. Even after I'd learned this wasn't the case, I'm still nostalgic for this rendition. Much bouncier and more fun in my opinion. In spite of (or maybe even because of) their accents, the vocals are much more refined on this one too.
Peaches En Regalia - Dweezil Zappa (original by Frank Zappa) - This one's kinda cheating because all Dweezil did was nab an unused take of the original, record some overdubs and put it out under his name. Feel like it's still worth mentioning though because they're all very fine musical additions. The original remains a masterpiece IMO and I go to it if I want something a bit less produced, but this is the song at the height of its powers.
Dirty Love - Cree Summer (original by Frank Zappa) - I remember first hearing this blind on the AAAFNRAAA Birthday Bundle and I always found something about this cover fits the whole idea of the song in a better way. Frank's deadpan vocals on a slow funk backing is cool and all, but the vocals here have more passion and playfulness put into them and the urgency on this performance ties it all in. The interpolation of I'm The Slime's riff is cool too. Though I never forgot how this cover sounded, I did forget who actually sung it and it wasn't until I did the research for this post that I found out it was famed voice actress Cree Summer.
The Only Way - Karnivool (original by Gotye) - The original's among my top 10 Gotye songs and I love Gotye to bits and pieces, so a cover of this song had better cut the mustard to be considered great. Without a doubt, this does; the prog-metal style of Karnivool is the perfect marriage for the intensity and subject matter of this song. In fact, it's even more intense to the point that I find the original underwhelming in direct comparison.
Just Can't Get Enough - Gotye (original by Depeche Mode) - A breathy, atmospheric piano ballad rendition of this song surprisingly works and gives more weight to it.
Love Buzz - Nirvana (original by Shocking Blue) - This takes the hypnotic riff of the original and adds a big sucker punch. Lots of dumb fun, especially in Kurt Cobain's quirky vocal delivery and the feedback section.
Molly's Lips - Nirvana (original by The Vaselines) - An unexpected pop-punk twist given to this song that makes it way more upbeat. Kinda has the same appeal to me as the Love Buzz cover.
Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam - Nirvana (original by The Vaselines) - If it's any consolation for not having the other MTV Unplugged covers on here, this is my favourite of the whole setlist. The melancholic campfire song vibe of this, combined with the left-field addition of accordion courtesy of Krist Novoselic, feels updated yet timeless, very Nirvana-esque while being divorced from Nirvana entirely. Yes, that's a weird mess of contradictions, idc.
Black Hole Sun - Anthony Vincent (original by Soundgarden) - Sometimes all you need is an acoustic guitar and an emotive singer (who's also an epic YouTuber) to make magic happen and this is a fantastic tribute that lives up to Chris Cornell's legacy. Despite my personal opinion that this is better, this is more of a companion piece to the original (which is still excellent) than anything.
Passionfruit - Cornelius (original by Drake) - I can't link the original version of this song because it has an explicit intro, but pretty much everybody knows it. Truth be told, I've always adored the original, but the looser smooth jazz spin that Cornelius has given it here definitely works in its favour as well.
Also any covers by Richard Cheese are instantly better than the original.

Nirvana's cover of Lovebuzz, by Shocking Blue.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkKu3rDl0yw - Nirvana Version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46oTLt5H_TA - Original
I prefer Nirvana's cover way more than the original, I think Nirvana really spiced up the track and gave it more energy.

Almost forgot Self's cover of Depeche Mode's Shame from the For The Masses tribute album (which I once wrote a long review of that nobody read). Considering most of the other songs covered on the album were hit singles or big fan-favourites, it's a bit surprising that this deep cut from Construction Time Again, an album that's not really regarded as much of a classic for some reason, was given a makeover as well. Surprisingly manages to turn such a bleak, downbeat track into some funky, danceable alt-techno-rock without any additional kitsch in the process. Depeche Mode's best (ex-)member himself, Alan Wilder, has wholeheartedly recommended this and I'm on board with him.

BUMP
I'd like to chip in The Wesley Willis Fiasco's cover of Duran Duran's Girls On Film. The original's fun, but replacing Duran Duran's sleek smarm with the manic performance here really elevates the song's unique elements IMO. I'm being entirely sincere when I say I prefer this.

Covers that are better than the original?
I want to contribute to this thread but I can't think of many covers I like any more than the originals. And the ones I can think of are different enough from the originals that I feel it's unfair to compare them.
