I think the Switch Lite is to the Switch like the original 2DS was to the 3DS - they removed a lot of features and cut many corners so they could make the console as cheap as possible while still having the same technical specs as it's better counterpart. The 2DS removed the 3D and the clamshell design, which was one of the main selling points of the 3DS originally, and the Switch Lite removed the ability to “switch”, which was one of the main selling points of the Switch originally.

At least the 2DS didn't have “3D” in the title like the 3DS did. The Switch Lite's name is false advertising.

It is false in the fact that you can no longer switch from portable with joycons attached to portable without joycons attached to a dock. However, I think they're using that name to let people know that it's compatible with Switch software, and isn't it's own system completely. I bet Nintendo's plan is to have “The Switch family”, where all the consoles that bear the Switch name can run all Switch software, while not necessarily being able to actually “switch”. The Lite being the cheaper, less flexible version, the OG Switch with all it's features and then we'll mostly likely get a “Switch Pro”, with improvements like a 1080p screen or possibly a spec boost, similarly to the PS4 -> PS4 Pro or Xbox One -> Xbox One X.

There's a $100 price gap (going from Nintendo's website) - $300 for the Switch, $200 for the Switch Lite

And a pair of Joy-Cons, because motion controls and rumble are important for some games (like, gees, I don't know, Super Mario Odyssey?!).
Also, in that original post, I said a pair of Joy-Cons would cost an extra seventy bucks. I was wrong; they cost eighty.

It's called marketing. Make a cheaper version of a product with missing features so people are more prone to buy the more expensive one, but still have a cheaper version available so people that can't afford the expensive one will still buy the cheaper one.

Speculation based on the Switch Lite: They're gonna make a Console Only version.

Eh, wouldn't really spend my money on this if I didn't have my Switch. If I had a choice to buy a Nintendo Switch Lite or to earn another $100 to get a Switch, I would save up $100 more because Switch Lite takes off everything that I thought that was cool when they first released the Switch trailer, taking off the controllers, being able to play on my TV and on the go, and the HD rumble.

You will have to spend another $90 for Super Mario Party (and other games)
Original Switch is still best (just like original Wii is better than Wii mini and 3ds is better than 2ds)
