Scratch VR | whenever it is coming to Scratch, or not.

Interesting.

My vote remains on no support. Not only would this be inefficient and an expense of resources of the Scratch Team (creating the extension), end users (making the goggles), even game creators (using the extension properly), it partially involves a rejected suggestion (3D Scratch).

I know you have a nifty tutorial, and I appreciate it, but again, this would reach very few people. The parents of the little kids may not want to spend money to buy the materials for the ingenious augmented reality headset of yours for just a Scratch project. This is basically making VR projects “pay to use”, since you have to pay for the materials for an AR headset or a full VR system just to play those projects, and using real currency to do stuff on Scratch is rejected. I know this spending is not directly on Scratch but it still makes a Scratch AR or VR project pay to use.

Sorry, bud.

Basically took the words right out of my mouth. Also, the only way Scratch VR would even have a chance of reaching most users would be if it had Google Cardboard support, and that requires a smartphone anyway, not to mention the fact that there would be considerable latency.
yeah. it will include a phone. and google cardboard would work good, but it will cause temporate whitness.

Yeah. Most people wouldn't be able to afford the materials to obtain an AR headset, even if it's makeshift, so it would be quite dividing, and would grow the gap between the people who have funding and those who don't.

Infrequently active.

It feels weird to see how far we've come. I hope you're well, wherever you are!

no support because
1. 3d scratch rejected
2. ppl could make motion sickness projects and disguise them as regular ones

Yes, but not everyone has a smartphone. I bet a lot of users can't really afford one
*raises hand* I

OP, cool idea, but I don't think it would work too well… I understand that you can make a headset out of cardboard, but cardboard is quite expensive… I've found that phone VR games aren't that great as well, they end up being almost impossible to play because you have 1-2 buttons max, so all in all, no support.

I suggest that you take a look at this forum topic as it contains some helpful insight on your suggestion's potential: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/245/

So, you want Scratch on VR? I see tons of potential that this suggestion could have, especially in the light of VR technology becoming more accessible and trendy.
However, would this help to exemplify Scratch's goals? Let's take a look at a few points.
  • Yes, this would expand Scratch's capabilities. Scratch was designed to allow for anyone regardless of programming or other subject experience to create projects based on their passions and interests regardless of simplicity or complexity. I see this suggestion having the capability to expand people's interest into something that's virtual reality.
  • No, this would not help to make Scratch a more accessible program to use. Scratch was designed for anyone regardless of experience to get into basic programming with a few simple tools, namely blocks. I foresee this addition to not help to expand Scratch's user base. In fact, I think this would make it harder for Scratchers to connect to this technology due to the resources required to run such programs and projects. How would they obtain these resources? Do kids have sufficient allowance money? Do they have the time to work with the program amid school and other responsibilities (albeit why would they spend time on Scratch in the first place if they didn't have time)? I do not see this addition making Scratch any easier for other users to join into this community and program.
  • As many of others have already stated, VR does not rely on a two-dimensional field. If we were living life in 2D, it would not be called “virtual reality” because we live in a three-dimensional world, not a two-dimensional one. This adds further complications to Scratch that the developers clearly stated that they are not willing to implement.
Sure, this is a cool technology that would be very fascinating to try out on Scratch. But based on our current demographics and the developer's priorities, I don't see this feature working out in the near future. Sorry.

This would be nice but not everybody has the VR equipment.

And I don’t think the ST can pull it off since they can’t even do multi-edited projects.

This is my signature. It appears after I post anything! (I added this for people who thought I was advertising)
and now i have finally removed that line of links, a lot don't work anyway after I unshared a bunch of projects
Oh look a rainbow (I wanted to make my whole signature a rainbow, but busted character limit)

Remember, he suggested making it compatible with makeshift AR goggles. Still, that costs money, and Scratch was supposed to be free.

No. They won't do it, because of private messaging.

What does VR have to do with private messaging?

Thank you for giving some support on Scratch VR. Fortunately, Scratch VR will not be coming until the scratch team fixes errors on Scratch 3.0. We wont know if Scratch VR is coming or not. This will be the last message of this forum thread. So now, CASE CLOSED.
