Choosing Messages

UPDATE: I created a userscript to serve as a temporary solution. Having this be a normal scratch feature would still be awesome, though!

When I first started scratch, I wanted to know about every love-it, favorite, and comment. Now, all I really care about are comments and forum updates. But I still get messages for love-its and favorites. I don't want that.

I think there should be a new tab under settings which lets you choose what you want to get messages for. Something like this:

^ I forgot to add a few, so here is a list of all the options there would be:
  • Comment on profile/project
  • Love-it on project
  • Favorite on project
  • Forum updates
  • Studio updates
  • Someone follows you

Support. I think that there should be more options, though, like for studios.

Generation 2: the first time you see this copy and paste it on top of your sig in the scratch forums and increase generation by 1. Social experiment.

Yeah, after I posted this, I realized that there are other ways to get messages. I'll update the first post.

Support, but I wouldn't use it. But what I would like, is like
“Jack, Jill, and 23 others (see full list) loved ”project“” and
“Jack, Jill and Arwin favorited ”project“”
(clicking see full list would bring you to another page that has a full list of users who loved, or vice versa for favorites.)

Short answer:
Not gonna happen. We'd need to many new servers.

Long answer:
Hmm… That sounds good, but from my understanding of how scratch messages work (or maybe lack thereof), I'm assuming it would require a major messages revamp. Here's how it works (remember, these are all assumptions):
1. Something happens (comment, love-it, favorite, etc.)
2. Scratch files a message in their servers.
3. You load up the scratch homepage.
4. The page checks that file of messages and tells you how many you have in the top right hand corner.
5. You go to the page, which reads the file and displays your messages.

How your idea whould have to work:
1. Something happens (same as above)
2. The message is filed (same as above)
Now here's where it gets tricky…
3. Scratch then has to run things called “cron jobs” those are little bits of code that run on a certian schedule (say, daily, weekly, monthly, or hourly).
4. A cron job will sort all your messages into the correct categories.
5. Then you look at your messages and are happier.

The problem is that with so many people on the scratch website every day, and so many cron jobs to run (so quickly), you would need to about triple the amount of servers dedicated to the scratch website. So it probably wouldn't happen.

Why couldn't it do so on demand? When someone clicks their messages, if there are messages to be grouped, group them. Anyways, that's a different suggestion (and i think there's already a topic for it).
