I know everyone here has a Scratch account, but if you don't, you can't name your projects. You can still save locally, but it comes up as ‘Scratch Project.sb3’ and when you next save as ‘Scratch Project(1).sb3’.
Why is this important?
We are currently supporting around 200 disadvantaged kids get into coding. We've had at least that number again pass through our clubs over the last couple of years. Most don't have email. Almost all are under 13 (so legally not allowed email). Given Scratch is aimed at 8-12, I'm baffled as to why email is required to be able to use Scratch fully.
Yes I know about Scratch Desktop, but my 30 laptops are running Ubuntu.
Granted I don't know the full intricacies of the new coding, but given I can save locally when not logged in. And I can name my files when I am logged in.
How hard can it be to enable that box when not logged in?
Or is this just a cynical drive for more user stats for MIT?

I'm sure this is just something that hasn't been added yet. There is still lots to be done with 3.0.
As for creating accounts for people. Have you thought about using a teacher account? If not then maybe you could set up a spare email for yourself to use for all the accounts?

I hope the feature is unlocked soon. It appears to be fully functional when logged in, but not otherwise.
I did look at teacher accounts, but the challenge is we have 15 clubs (and growing) with 200 young people (and growing). The home background for many means they turn up for a few weeks then drop out. They may come back a few weeks / months later, or not.
Clubs also don't run a like a ‘normal’ class. We've got a few clubs that have been running continuously for 3 yrs.
Some young people do have their own scratch account - you can't currently add these to a class. Also we have some young people that attend more than one club. Again, something you can't do with classes.
We've also got some young people that are vulnerable and there are no safeguarding processes in place with Scratch (other than manually checking all activity on every one of the +200 kids and informing the Scratch team - which is all very horse-door-bolted and not good enough). There isn't a single comment / discussion thread on ScratchEd about safeguarding processes, I guess it's a different situation in schools / US.
Will hold out for local save for now.
cheers
John

Turns out there is a solution (sort of).
It looks like the re-code now uses the build in file download function from whichever browser you're in. I'm mostly using Chrome so Scratch hands off that file.
If you change the advanced settings of Chrome to always ask about download location, it interrupts the auto-save and you can:
a) rename the file to something sensible
b) save to a sensible location
However, Scratch itself doesn't remember the file name because it hands over a default Scratch-Project and doesn't get anything back from the user. When you next save, yup, back to Scratch-Project. At least Chrome has the gumption to remember where you last saved so you can double click on your last save file to update it, but would be much ‘nicer’ solution to have a temp variable in Scratch for the file name.
It would also avoid the problem with kids where they delete the file name to save their work, but also delete the .sb3 so when they come to reload their work next week, Scratch can't find it.

Yo I say my friend is DEVASTATED because scratch didnt save her work
Hi there! Welcome to the scratch forums! There are a few things about your post that you could fix!
1. Try to keep it productive. Just saying someone is upset because scratch didn't save their work isn't necessarily helping this thread. You should ask questions, give reasons why it could be useful, and go into further depth
2. It is even worse because this is a year old. That is called necroposting, and it isn't good. If you post on an old topic, make sure that it is helping in the conversation.
3. Please clarify. What do you mean by “I say my friend is devastated”? Is that how you think they are feeling? Did they tell you this?
4. Just a preference that most people would like, (you don't have to do it) is to try not to say “yo” and adding things in cap, it almost sounds like you are rapping to me.
That is ok though! You know for next time!

I saved my project on my account, and then all of a sudden, on the scratch web, the search bar is so long that I can't see a sign in button where I can go account? Is this Scratch's problem or is it just me?

Scratch's servers haven't been doing too well recently, so that's the main reason. Also, please don't bump up old topics I saved my project on my account, and then all of a sudden, on the scratch web, the search bar is so long that I can't see a sign in button where I can go account? Is this Scratch's problem or is it just me?
