We seem to be depending on you for a lot of things! Is this really realistic? I would be sad if you flunked out of high school because of us!

These things have been on my to do list for quite a while, but I haven’t made much progress on anything for the last 2 years thanks to the IB program and college apps. Now that most of my IB requirements besides final exams are fulfilled and college apps are over, I should have a lot more free time. At least until college starts.

I don’t even have school for a good portion of my last quarter because there’s so little to do. My high school makes all of us find an internship for that period instead.

I found out that Snap 5 beta can be already tested on the Snap website. As the download link brings me to 4.2.2.9 I cannot read the history. Which are the new features?

Oh, is that going to be us? (That is, the University of California.)

There are about a gazillion little things, but the big thing is support for the “social” (Scratch-esque) web site.

I haven’t figured out what I’m doing yet, but it could be the University of California.

I need to be report to a physical location everyday, though, and California is slightly far away.

Nah, California is right here!

I think you should teach your school about telecommuting. Tell them that even if you did come here physically, you wouldn't learn how to wear jackets and ties.

EDIT: And you wouldn't die of frostbite.

EDIT2: And I have a guest room…

Beta testers wanted for new web site!

Please visit https://cloud.snap.berkeley.edu/site/ and try to break it! And tell us how you like its general appearance, etc.

Thanks!

A fairly easy-to-find issue with the new site is that it doesn't work well on mobile - there are a lot of overlapping elements, a lot of stuff right up against the left edge of the screen, and the project lists make the page wider than it's supposed to be.

Looks a lot more professional

Needs prominent link to new forum (or this thread) rather than being buired in the footer like other block programming sites

Would like to see link to old BYOB 3.11 in the footer

Everything worked well in my very short test. I like the site and the opportunites it opens.

What I don't like? The page moving vertically when I click the forward/backward arrows in the project lists in the homepage (and explore page)

Wow - just clicked on explore

Wasn't expecting the full Scratch like experience - very slick

Now that there's a separate player mode, it might be a good idea to investigate tweaking the default behavior for dragging sprites.

In Scratch, the sprite's “draggable” property is false by default. This property only affects the sprite's behavior in player/presentation mode, and the sprite can be dragged in the editor even if it's false.

In Snap!, the sprite's “draggable” property is true by default, and it affects the sprite's behavior in editor mode too.

That might not be the behavior people expect when coming from Scratch. Letting the sprites be dragged in player mode doesn't usually make sense, and users might forget to set their sprites to undraggable before publishing. There are already some instances of this on the website, like this project.

Hypothetical question: Suppose there were a Snap! conference in Germany in October. Who'd come?

I'd wholeheartedly want to, and I would if only I were able… but I suppose that's not what you're asking.

Well, suppose it were somehow paid for. Could you ditch school for a while in October? (I'm trying to get a better sense of what things we should be taking into account in planning.

I'm homeschooled, so I certainly have the capability to do so. It would be a learning experience, of course! But… no passports. And legal-ish stuff that is probably different for me than for other people, to an extent, because Reasons.™ But I'd rather like to try anyway, if I were to suppose that..
