Bulletin Boards

Hello! Here's my idea:
A bulletin board topic category for the Discussion Forums.
This would allow people to make archives, things that couldn't fit in the description of games, rules, etc.

What is a bulletin board?
With the bulletin board, you would be able to make a topic that only you would be able to comment on.
For example, I'm making an RPG game with tons of lore and history and want to have a place to put it. I could make a bulletin board topic so others wouldn't be able to comment and jam it, but I'd be able to continually add history just by commenting
.
From my understanding, the Roblox Developer Forum has a Bulletin Board and I've seen people do handbooks for Wizarding Schools, other stuff that I can't think of right now, etc.

Please leave your suggestions below.

That would be a great feature. The only thing we have now is to close topic. But then its closed forever and you can't edit the posts.

Weak support, leaning towards no support.

I'd also want a feature like this, but there are a couple problems with it. It seems like a sort of “Miscellaneous” forum, in a way, which is rejected. Also, people could easily spam it and “bump” their topics to the top too much.

Sorry if this makes no sense, I'm a bit tired at the moment.

A Bulletin Board is just another name for forum, no?
The software the Scratch Forum runs on DjangoBB (From Django - the Python web framework the forums run on, and BB - Bulletin Board)

In fact the term Bulletin Board comes from before forums themselves.
BBSes (Bulletin Board Systems) existed on the internet and also before the so-called “world wide web” existed a BBS ran on a phone line - like how Dial Up internet worked, but the was before large scale interconnected networks (the internet) were a thing.

BBSes were systems like forums but over a terminal. They can still be connected to in modern day using either dial-up, ssh or telnet

And even before them, we are forgetting about the original bulletin board!

Just a big notice board that is designed to easily allow pinning / unpinning notices and can be added to by anyone!

So, no support, Forums are designed to be posted to by anyone! Ye Olde physical Bulletin Boards gave their name to BBSes because they could be posted to by anyone!

Perhaps a better idea is a blog system for profiles and projects?
Such as scratch.mit.edu/users/bybb/blog
and scratch.mit.edu/users/bybb/blog/[project id]

The proposed Miscellanesous forum didn't have the only-the-owner-can-post property, but I can see why you're unsteady. People in the this category (suggestions )can already spam and bump their topics, and there are systems in place to prevent it, like the 120 (For new scratchers) and the dreaded 60 second rule for normal Scratchers. So I'm not sure why you're bringing this up when its a problem with all the forums.

Thanks for the history lesson, but I think you're missing the main point. In my suggestion Bulletin Board, people can create topics and only they can post on them, for better archives, rules, etc. I'm not requesting another category for just random stuff.

Ah, I see.
This would be a very good idea, and would avoid having topics with a lot of “reserved” posts. In fact, I can see this being very useful for topics like directories and user-made stickies in certain sub-forums, but my main concern is spam.

If this feature would be implemented I think it would be safe to say each user would only need one of these topics being “poster only” at a time, and New Scratchers wouldn't have access to these to avoid spam. If you want to make a new one, you should have to set your old one to public posting.

I'd also not allow the poster to whitelist users to post, as this would create an “invite-only club” sort of thing and could be used to isolate people.

The ST would obviously be able to post on these, for moderation purposes (and it would be a good way for the ST to create topics only they and other ST members could post on, if the wanted to)

So, support!

Ubuntu. I run it on my servers and I love the ease of use and near-global support for apt / apt-get!

oh, this could be cool! i like it, but there's a daunting fundamental problem I see here. this stems from the concept of it not having inherent subject matter restrictions, which could easily lead to spam, unrelated discussion, a lot of gray area and debate on what belongs there and what doesn't, and posts from many new scratchers who simply just don't understand the idea as a whole. what I would be most afraid of here is this kind of thing clogging up the bulletin board and becoming a huge headache for the moderators. thoughts?

Sorry for the late response but the flawless Scratch Notification System decided to not send me any notification about a new post even though I'm clearly following this topic.

There's still systems in place to combat spam.

goldfish678 wrote:

unrelated discussion,
There isn't really discussion in the Bulletin Boards, just one person posting what they want if it relates to Scratch.

goldfish678 wrote:

I don't really see a problem of people aruging about what is allowed and not allowed, anything should belong if it in someway related to scratch and complies the the community guidelines and the ToU.

This already happens on the existing forum categories, and it's easy to get it moved and teach the new scratcher how it works.

Can you please specify what “this kind of thing” is please?
it took ages to do all the quotes

This could be a good idea, but I think this could kinda also fit in “Show and Tell”, right?

Yes, but show and tell doesn't have the property of only you being able to comment. Please read the whole thread before posting so I can stop telling you that it has the property of only you being able to post on it.

Semi-support
I really see how this can be useful, because I personally would like something like this to update people on my projects and stuff, but the reason why I'm leaning to no support is spam. I know that anyone can spam in any forum, but I feel like with a forum like this it's more of a miscallaneous type forum, so people could practically post whatever they want, leading to harder moderation.
Sorry if that was confusing
