Scratch Chess Engine - Game of Kings

Bonsai (green) - GoK (medium)

If wonder, if there's some yet unknown AI in those engines or elsewhere which detects who's the tester and produces a result he likes.

On Medium and Green they are pretty equal in playing strength - and interestingly also in think time, at least on Sulfurous. I once played 3 games in a row, it was one win each and one draw. I posted that in the comments some weeks ago as far as I remember. Also I have experimented quite a bit lately with search depth on Medium (for now I traded playing strength for speed on Medium, vice versa to Difficult), so depending when one played, the result might have looked differently.

At the moment one of the most promising enhancements for GoK would be bitboards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitboard). There are no bitwise operations in Scratch, but I had the idea to lookup eight times from a precalculated 256x256 = 64k table for every per-byte bitwise operation, to get 64bit operations emulated at good speed. That would make the engine so much faster so we could extend search depth significantly.

Most of all, move generation would benefit from bitboards, this is what currently eats up big chunks of runtime. That basically also means ripping the engine's inner workings apart and assembling them again afterwards, something for which I currently don't have the time. But let's see what the future will bring.

Thanks, it actually plays best on the fast Sulfurous engine, as it can increase search depth. That's at https://sulfurous.aau.at/html/app.html?id=148769358.

OK, so the GoK development version at https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/208477599/ now contains full iterative deepening prototype on level “Difficult” (the main version only does that up to ply3). Initial tests look promising, a lot better than when I tried that once a couple of months ago. Even in the worst case scenario (complex board on Scratch 2.0 and slow machine), it is faster. Currently has a guaranteed thinktime of 40-60 seconds. On endgame it went to ply10 and saw checkmate in 8.

Here is a fun game that GoK (white) lost against Bonsai - all the latest improvements are nice, and at the point GoK made its fatal mistake it was working on ply9 - but ply14 would have been necessary to see that Bonsai secured its pawn promotion here. https://lichess.org/6uq1zRMV#68

Scratch Chess Engine - Game of Kings

Another engine vs engine test game, actually the standard setup on Scratch 2.0 with similar think time. GoK (Medium, white) vs. Bonsai (Green, black): https://lichess.org/9qz0eFXo. On move 15 GoK ran into a horizon effect, that it would have prevented on a higher level or faster runtime.

On Sulfurous, GoK (Easy) is 3:1 against Bonsai (Green).

I also let GoK (Easy, Sulfurous) play one game against each Archimedes, The Turk and Midecah. GoK won every single game in less than ten moves, but of course benefited from opponent's mistakes.

Scratch Chess Engine - Game of Kings

Game of Kings plays against the first three Scratch Chess Engines ever created

GoK Chess (Easy, Sulfurous) vs. Midecah Chess (Scratch 2.0, as project doesn't work on Sulfurous): https://lichess.org/zyO6s1v1 (GoK wins in 8 moves)
GoK Chess (Easy, Sulfurous) vs. The Turk (Sulfurous): https://lichess.org/UN8CTbxq (GoK wins in 9 moves)

Scratch Chess Engine - Game of Kings

Game of Kings plays against its favorite opponent: Bonsai

With the Zobrist hash overflow bug fixed (which had led to transposition table cache misses on Scratch 2.0), GoK plays better against Bonsai due to additional search depth via iterative deepening:

GoK Chess (Medium, Scratch 2.0) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Scratch 2.0): https://lichess.org/QJbnvseV (GoK wins in 45 moves)
GoK Chess (Medium, Scratch 2.0) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Scratch 2.0): https://lichess.org/5Swn6lZd (GoK wins in 20 moves)
GoK Chess (Medium, Scratch 2.0) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Scratch 2.0): https://lichess.org/k2jh1cX8 (GoK wins in 60 moves)

GoK Chess (Difficult 60sec, Scratch 2.0) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Scratch 2.0): https://lichess.org/SlVbzo41 (GoK wins in 46 moves)

Sulfurous had not been affected. No int overflows there.

GoK Chess (Medium, Sulfurous) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Sulfurous): https://lichess.org/ciUVDrP2 (GoK wins in 41 moves)
GoK Chess (Medium, Sulfurous) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Sulfurous): https://lichess.org/YkjXcwlx (GoK wins in 55 moves)
GoK Chess (Medium, Sulfurous) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Sulfurous): https://lichess.org/TU21EnB9 (GoK wins in 42 moves)

GoK Chess (Easy, Sulfurous) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Sulfurous): https://lichess.org/dmeNfEnA (GoK wins in 58 moves)
GoK Chess (Easy, Sulfurous) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Sulfurous): https://lichess.org/dEE4YttC (Bonsai wins in 72 moves)
GoK Chess (Easy, Sulfurous) vs. Bonsai Chess (Green, Sulfurous): https://lichess.org/VdqmxKf2 (GoK wins in 63 moves)

Scratch Chess Engine - Game of Kings

I have tested GoK against my professional-strength chess engine, Shredder. I initially set Shredder to play at 1800 elo, and Shredder adjusted its playing strength by itself after each game depending on how GoK did against it. Five games were played, which I have notated below. Also listed for each game is the strength Shredder was playing at and Shredder's estimate for GoK's playing strength at the time.

Game #1: GoK (?) – Shredder (1800) (1-0)

Wooow, really cool - thanks for the effort. So this was running GoK with the fast Sulfurous engine at https://sulfurous.aau.at/html/app.html?id=148769358, right? On level Difficult, when you press ‘c’, GoK goes into a 60 seconds think time mode. I let it play five games against Stockfish 6 (1900), and it ended 2,5 : 2,5. Combined with your results I conclude that GoK plays at around ELO 1900.

Yes, Arno Hu. For the five games, my result was 1902 elo for GoK; pretty darn close to your 1900 result.
