Andromeda - Chapter 4

ANDROMEDA

part 2 - Farah

Far. The nickname I had had since the day I was born. It described me, actually really well, which was kind of depressing. I was always off to the side, quiet and forgotten, and no one ever bothered much with me. And I liked it that way, even if it wasn’t always the best days of my life.
“Two suns to Far.”
I snapped my head up from the table, my vision clearing away from the foggy dreamland I had been in. Ulani was snapping her fingers in front of my face, her black hair dangling as she tilted her head to meet mine.
“Seriously. Were you dreaming again?”
I raised my eyebrows. “What do you mean, again?”
“I’ve been counting.” Yani stepped out from behind her twin, her arms crossed over her chest. “I think you’ve might have broken a record. You’ve already reached thirty-three.”
I smiled at the pair.
“Wow. Such nice friends that keep track how many times I’ve been gone. What have I missed?”
“Oh, you know—” Yani started.
“A lot,” finished Ulani.
“There was a report of—”
“A spaceship—”
“Crashed into the rings of Terraton—”
“BIG explosion, I’ve heard.” The twins ricocheted their words off each other’s, taking turns like they had memorized a script only for them.
“No one knows who’s ship it is—”
“And it doesn’t even look like any of the districts.”
I stared at them.
“And so you guys never bothered to tell me this until after it was over?” I asked. Both of the twins nodded their heads like everything was sunny and bright.
“Come on,” I said, standing up from the table.
We were in the main building of Astron, at the Diamond Plaza. It was on Diamond Craft asteroid, the second biggest one ever. Tubes running along each asteroid made a safe oxygen connection to allow access to all buildings.
The Diamond Plaza, the biggest building on Astron, was a giant dome, built with orange supports to hold up the glass against pressure. It had an underground passage that was made to lead to the Tourist’s Hub, on Glitter Rock.
“Where are we going?” Ulani followed behind me, and then I heard Yani skipping to follow her sister.
“To check out the ship,” I said from over my shoulder. I heard both twins stop.
“But you can’t—” Yani said.
“Go to the ship—”
“It’s past our defenses.”
“And it’s right next to the most defensive place in Andromeda,” I said back, turning around. “So, really, we’re fine.”
“But only you have a passport,” Ulani complained.
“Yeah,” Yani joined in.
“I’ll bring something back to you guys,” I promised. I just needed a couple of things to complete the invention I was making. This ship was going to be the key to the survival of Astron.
“Okay,” the twins said in unison.
They stood there for a second, and then I heard them walk back to the Plaza table, and I continued to the elevator that would bring me up to Jewel Asteroid, which was halfway hovering over Diamond Craft.
As I reached my hand to press the elevator button to open it, a finger beat me to it. I looked up into two blue eyes.
“Hello, Far.”
“Hi, Cayson,” I said back as the door opened and I stepped inside. He followed me in and pressed the button labeled JEWEL. I made my way to the far end of the elevator, folding my arms. Cayson awkwardly stuffed his hands into his pockets, watching the window of the elevator. You could see Terraton outside just barely, it was only a tiny yellow blob flickering in the sunlight. Stars dotted space, bright white against black.
The elevator shook as it rose to a stop, and the two grey doors opened.
“Well,” I said to Cayson as we both stepped out.
“See ya,” he finished for me.
“Yeah. See you.”
He walked away, and I stood there, watching him go down the hallway towards the Upper City. He had light brown hair, you could almost call it blonde, and it was curly, not frizzy like most people said. Cayson was the Astron’s jokester. Even though it was kind of annoying sometimes, it usually didn’t bother me when he told the world’s lamest jokes.
He was that kind of kid, the one who would tap on your left shoulder, and then laugh when you looked over it and found no one there.
I turned away and headed towards one of the air tunnels that led to the spaceport which would then take me to the rings of Terraton. And then to the crashed spaceship that no one knew who flew it.
The tunnel was all glass, and it sent shivers down my spine while I thought about what would happen if it were to crack suddenly, and I’d fall into space. I knew that this, and most of the Astron buildings were made out of the strongest material ever and that it could withstand an asteroid crash, but I still hurried down the long passageway.
