Why the name "Scratch" is used?

This is what the Scratch Wiki says:

Scratch Wiki wrote:

“Scratch” was used as the title for The Lifelong Kindergarten Group's programming language, as it is to do with “scratching” referring to music.

Wikipedia wrote:

Scratching is a DJ or turntablist technique used to produce distinctive sounds by moving a vinyl record back and forth on a turntable while optionally manipulating the crossfader on a DJ mixer.
Likewise, within Scratch, you take different bits of code (blocks), put them together, and have made something new.

Mitchell Resnick, Lifelong Kindergarten Group at MIT wrote:

We take the name “Scratch,” from the way that hip-hop disk jockeys scratch with music. They take pieces of music and then combine them together in unexpected and creative ways.

I always thought it was because the mascot is a cat, and cats SCRATCH furniture.

I also thought it might have had something to do with the phrase “starting from scratch”, which would make sense since children are taking their ideas and creating new ideas from them — i.e. “building from scratch”.

I was surprised to learn that neither of us were right.

I think it would be the opposite, where they came up with the name and then used the mascot to fit the name.

I'm pretty sure it's to do with remixing, as said above with ‘taking music’ it's to do with not only the ability to create code but the ability to remix and change other people's code.

Hi there, please don't necropost! Here's a Scratch Wiki article if you want to know what necroposting is.
