Why the name "Scratch" is used?
This is what the Scratch Wiki says:
“Scratch” was used as the title for The Lifelong Kindergarten Group's programming language, as it is to do with “scratching” referring to music.Likewise, within Scratch, you take different bits of code (blocks), put them together, and have made something new. Scratching is a DJ or turntablist technique used to produce distinctive sounds by moving a vinyl record back and forth on a turntable while optionally manipulating the crossfader on a DJ mixer. We take the name “Scratch,” from the way that hip-hop disk jockeys scratch with music. They take pieces of music and then combine them together in unexpected and creative ways.

SCRATCH furniture.I also thought it might have had something to do with the phrase “starting from scratch”, which would make sense since children are taking their ideas and creating new ideas from them — i.e. “building from scratch”. I always thought it was because the mascot is a cat, and cats
I was surprised to learn that neither of us were right.

SCRATCH furniture.I think it would be the opposite, where they came up with the name and then used the mascot to fit the name. I always thought it was because the mascot is a cat, and cats

I'm pretty sure it's to do with remixing, as said above with ‘taking music’ it's to do with not only the ability to create code but the ability to remix and change other people's code.
