Some questions about drawing sprites/backgrounds
Hello all the fortunate people reading this thread,
i have a few questions in regard to the costume editor in scratch 2.0. I used to go on scratch daily, practically, and always be messing around with all 1.4 had to offer. one of my favorite things about it was how you could always pinpoint exactly where a line/circle/rectangle started, and in whatever shape the line was, it would look like that when you let go of the mouse. i just started going on scratch again recently and find it tedious that when you draw a line (even in bitmap mode) if starts out as clean and crisp, but then becomes all weird and dark in some spots and light in others.
Thanks, and if some change could be made id be one happy scratcher.

Some questions about drawing sprites/backgrounds
Point of advice: Use another bitmap editor. The vector in Scratch is fine (but has some pesky bugs) but bitmap is a bug at times.

Some questions about drawing sprites/backgrounds
I'm not sure i know what you mean. Go to 1.4 make a sprite, then upload to 2.0? maybe. I'm used to making my sprites by putting in specific pixels to make a sprite the enlarging it to make it look nice and pixel-y. All I'm saying is that 2.0 doesn't let me do that.

Some questions about drawing sprites/backgrounds
Scratch 2.0 uses double resolution, in which it uses a subpixel grid (basically every pixel is now 1/4 the normal size). Since a computer can't really display a subpixel, any areas where a subpixel appears will show up as blurry. And that's what's happening because a lot of the tools use subpixel shapes.
The developers apparently added it in there so bitmap images don't look as wonky when in fullscreen online. Personally I'm not a big fan of the subpixel stuff, I think it brings up a lot more bugs with the bitmap editor and brings up more confusion as to the proper drawing scale, making subpixeling it less helpful than it really is.
I've been trying to push for using normal pixels every since they came up with the system. Maybe if there's enough support from the rest of the pixel art community for converting back to they way pixels work in 1.4, we could get the developers to fix it sooner? *hint hint, nudge nudge*

Some questions about drawing sprites/backgrounds
I'm a professional pixel artist - been doing it for over a decade now, so I hope my advice can bear some weight. It truly makes no sense to have the subpixel grid for bitmap graphics. From an authorship point of view it's confusing and problematic. The grid enforces whole pixels except when you're dragging, at which point it paints with subpixels between the two points.
If it's necessary to have double resolution for things like retina screens or full-screen mode, then I suggest the developers abstract it away as a post-process uprez on the sprite that's invisible to the user. But even then, I'm not sure how this can't simply be solved by making sure to always use nearest neighbor image filtering (also called point-sampling)
Anyway, I can think of absolutely zero positive benefits from the current sub-pixel grid from an authorship point of view.

while I'm thinking about it, it's also very confusing to draw with vector shapes while in bitmap mode. I highly suggest they rasterize the shape (rectangle tool, oval tool, etc) while you're in the process of drawing with it. At the absolute minimum they should ensure that the shapes snap to whole-pixel values.

I'm really glad to see that all of you know what i mean
If any changes are to be made, i think it should only be done on bitmap. the vector stuff is pretty cool, but seems more experimental than anything.
I hope that we'll be seeing difference when the legit 2.0 comes out. I agree with you, fez, there are really no positives of the current system.
