Remind: Read, Read, Read!
Hello! Thank you for reading!
It is very important that you read over the summer when you're not in school and during other holiday breaks. Not only does it help you develop language skills that are crucial, but it also helps you keep the stuff you already know locked in your head. That's right - you can loose knowledge and forget important facts, just because you aren't reading a book or two frequently.
Not reading at all for just the period of one summer break can set you back 5 months in school. Why? Like stated earlier - you can loose important skills and forget crucial AND basic facts just by not reading. Even if reading isn't your thing and/or you aren't the best reader, reading is crucial. Even if you just read comics or picture books, reading is not only entertaining but also helping you develop and better understanding in speech and grammar.
Needing to enhance your spelling skills or reading skills? There's no better teacher than a book, my friend! Books also help will spelling! Even if you think of yourself as smart or a good reader, there is always knowledge to gain and you can get it by reading.
Reading opens up doors to new worlds and opportunities. With books, a chilly blizzard is possible even if you're sitting out in the hot sun. A mermaid or a goblin can be right outside your window with the turn of a page.
Reading is important - for your brain, and your future.

Well, the better at spelling and grammar thing depends by the age and skill level
At around 6th grade I became disinterested in reading due to the fact I could essentially read anything if I wanted too. Other than the obscene amount of baseball articles I read every day, I haven't read a book in around 2-3 months.
Sometimes reading isn't fun for people either, to me many books are predictable and require more time than I'm wanting to spend in it.
I don't specifically avoid books though, it's just hard to find ones I enjoy. If there's anything I've learned, someone learns nothing through reading something they do not enjoy.

That is very true.
In 4th grade, I was moved to the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade building in my school district. All the books were too easy for me, and I had to turn to the local city library. I would consider my reading level and grammar level beyond normal for a 12-year-old, but I think there's still a lot everyone can learn. But you can always find higher-level reading things. Mainly, I'm trying to encourage those who think they're bad at reading that they aren't.
You are right about many things. You don't just have to read books. The key word is ‘read’. Books might not be fun, but other forms of reading are.
The point I'm trying to get across is that you should be reading during summer, no matter how you do it.
Thank you for the additional information, though!

Isn't that the fun part of back to school though? You come back unable to hold a pencil, completely void of information and then slowly regain knowledge over the course of a week until you're back at your previous state. Not reading at all for just the period of one summer break can set you back 5 months in school. Why? Remind: Read, Read, Read!
When I was younger, I read a book almost every day - I wasn't very selective with what I read, and I could just about enjoy any book that I picked up.
Now, because of a combination of lack of time and easy access to a laptop, I don't really read that often anymore. I still enjoy reading a good book whenever I pick one up, but I've also found that many books that used to appeal to me no longer do so; now, I prefer books that leave a lasting emotional footprint on me when I read them, have original content or bend some sort of cliche, or have some sort of philosophical value that makes me think; I'm no longer really into the same action-adventure type books that I used to be into.
Actual, published books aside, though: I go on fanfiction.net every day. I really need a life XD
