JakeTheProgrammer's ULTIMATE GAME REVIEWS! (REOPENED!)

Question: Can you review Operating Systems?

Hallo everyone, my name is GTplaysGames, and welcome to my page on Scratch!

My main attraction is Quake OS! It is a dumb little project that somehow gained a lot of attraction and traffic in the past months. Check it out on my page.

Hmm… Unfortunately, I do not have any experience with OSes (plural of OS?) in Scratch so I wouldn't really know how to differentiate between good OSes and bad OSes!

I did take a look at your OS though, and from the perspective of a game developer and tester, let me tell you what I think you can improve on (this is not a full review, just some tips and advice )
  • Consistency - I like the old sort of feel to the OS, with all the pixellated graphics and such, but I think Fish Catch felt… out of place. The vector graphics didn't fit with the rest of the project.
  • Graphics - Some of the other graphics also looked like they could use some improvement. The GT logo at the bootup of the project seemed like it was drawn without much thought. I would recommend making it more… professional I guess. Not sure exactly what I'm looking for.
  • Sound - I liked the sounds as well! The only issue I had with sounds was when I beat a level in the maze game and the cheering and appluase happened, it felt out of place for me! I think some sort of techno-electric victory chime should play instead of people clapping.

That's pretty much all I could think of! And take my review with a grain of salt, I do not have experience with OSes!

Alright, thanks. I'll work on it. Fish Catch and the Maze were actually games I made separately and I just decided that I should port them. Thanks, though!

And plus In a couple updates, I might even remove them entirely, because I might be adding an app store!

JakeTheProgrammer's ULTIMATE GAME REVIEWS! (REOPENED!)

Review of Last Strike! by kieranblackley
Review by JakeTheProgrammer
Entertainment: 5/20 I have never played a boxing game before (except in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games), and it honestly wasn't something too exciting for me. The characters moved really slowly, and I found I could win by spamming the space bar. It just seemed… bland to me. Maybe that's how this genre of games are supposed to be, I'm not sure, but I think something more fast paced would definitely help here. Quicker movement, adding combos, every character has a different special ability, unlocking characters, having a shop, an adventure mode (I see you are working on this), and other features would also add to the excitement of the game, and then the entertainment score would go up! Also, adding a multiplayer option would be nice so I could play against my brother. Give me a reason to play the game over and over again! I do see how the current version is still very new and subject to change, so I'm excited to see where this game will go from here!
Creativity: 10/15 I have never played a boxing game in Scratch before, so this is a creative game! The characters are great (probably from another game I am not aware of?) and the game did seem creative. Adding a sweet twist to the game (special abilities, powerups, etc.) would improve the score in this category.
Sound: 6/10 The sounds were good in the game! I like the sound effects for hitting the other player and the background music. I would recommend adding sounds when I click the start button and when I click on a character. Other than that, there just wasn't enough content in the game to get a higher score. Add more features, add sounds to those features, and this score will go up to 10!
Graphics: 12/15 I'll admit, I did like the graphics here. The consistency of the graphics was pretty great (even your profile at the beginning seemed to match. Either that's coincidence or you planned it out ) I also like how the health bars shrink instead of showing a ‘Health p1’ variable or something like that. I would recommend having a new background for the menu screen (it's just a blank green screen right now), maybe alternate arenas to fight in, and with more feature, add nice graphics for those. With these suggestions, your score here will go up!
Ease of Use: 8/15 You probably knew this was coming, but remember to have instructions to the game inside the game. Other than that, the instructions were pretty straightforward, so I think you deserve an 8 here.
Story: 1/10 Well, there isn't a story, and I can't really tell if there is a theme of some sorts. The characters seem really random to me (if they are from another game, let me know and I might make modifications to the scores here), so introducing them in a story/adventure mode would be nice. Remember, let me know why I am playing the game. Who am I? Why am I boxing these characters? Add a story, and that should give you some easy points here!
Coding: 7/15 I couldn't find any bugs and the game seemed to run smoothly the whole time. The only reason I am giving you a 7 is because there really isn't that much content, so I can't give you a perfect score here until you add more features and those features are coded well!

Total: 49/100 You are one point away from a Good Badge! Keep up the good work, and I'm sure this game will explode in popularity (as I have not seen a game like this in Scratch)! I would definitely be willing to re-review this game once you add an adventure mode, as I'm sure that will increase some points in many of the categories! Other than that, add instructions in-game and you should be set to get Great Badge or above!

I am not exactly pleased by the review since from what I remember the game did take at least 5-6 hours to make. The game was mainly intended to be a basic test for a game I might make and I did have the idea of adventure mode and started working on it and the game started getting a bit confusing to create. Also the art is not from any game I have heard or seen before. The games art was found on opengameart and was made by a user on it called Spring and was allowed for anyone to use.

I am sorry that you are not pleased with the review. In the initial post, I stated that you should not expect above a Good Badge unless you have worked for over 100 hours on a game! But, I will say, I am impressed that you were able to do your game in around 6 hours! Good games do tend to take quite a lot of time (multiple days).

Also some of the sounds were from another game. And quite like the game it is inspired by, you have to win by mashing the buttons on your controller.(The game is called Street Fighter II and it comes from the 90s)
I like the idea of a story though and thinking about it, I might write a basics story for it.

JakeTheProgrammer's ULTIMATE GAME REVIEWS! (REOPENED!)

Review of Simple Clicker by Heacogra
Review by JakeTheProgrammer
Entertainment: 12/20 I found myself playing this game for well over 15 minutes! That's awesome! It's just after I was able to spam the Heacogra button once a second, the excitement kind of faded away. I would suggest either adding more after Heacogra or slowing down how fast it takes to get to that level. I also noticed that I could easily get a Heacogra, in about 5 minutes. Getting the most OP button in the game should take way more than 5 minutes in a clicker game. (My strat was first get +10 click value about 15 times, get a couple ultra clickers, couple will wams, get +2500 click value a couple times, voila, I have the Heacogra very quickly). Because of this, I would suggest either to rebalance the buttons (make stuff more expensive as you buy them?) or make Heacogra even more expensive. I know clicker games also generally don't have an end goal, and it seemed you tried to make one by increasing the dollar amount on the front screen, but that also took me a very short amount of time. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the game should be rebalanced to take at least 20 minutes to get the most OP button and even longer to get the largest dollar bill! (Since you played my Scratch clicker, I'm pretty sure you noticed how it took quite a long time to get Curators. I think that amount of time is somewhat reasonable )
Creativity: 3/15 I've seen quite a lot of clicker games on Scratch (I have one myself), so it makes it somewhat unoriginal. Especially since you are just clicking money, it seems like there could be more of a creative twist. For example, Scratch Clicker (I do not mean to be self advertising but that's the only example I have XD) has a creative twist by making it click a Scratch project and it utilizes loves and favorites for super bonuses. Adding some sort of creative twist and changing up the gameplay formula would definitely help you here.
Sound: 4/10 The music was pretty nice, but that was the only sound I found in the game. Firstly, I would recommend adding some sort of light sound when you click the dollar bill and when you buy upgrades. Then, I would add a mute button (maybe a mute button for music and another for sound effects?) somewhere so people could choose whether they want the sounds or not.
Graphics: 8/15 The graphics actually seemed really nice here! I like the consistent vector graphics throughout the project, and I like how the buttons and dollar bill shrink a little when you click them. I would definitely suggest adding a graphical effect when you hover over a button (making the brightness +5 or something like that), and maybe something more of a background? Something not distracting (or even unlock backgrounds with money?). Other than that, adding a text engine to render the money and CPS instead of variables would add to the graphics score!
Ease of Use: 6/15 This should be an easy one to fix, but add instructions inside the game. Adding a (?) button somewhere that describes what the buttons do and what the goal of the game is would be nice. It also did take me a while before I fully understood that the menu was larger than 5 buttons, I guess make the More Options button stand out a bit more? The different things you could buy also weren't in any order, so I had to constantly be going through the menu to buy stuff, instead of having everything sorted by cost or theme. Another thing is that buttons should display how much CPS they are going to add, either in a speech bubble next to them or somewhere else. This makes it so I don't have to constantly look at the descriptions pane and be focused on the game itself.
Story: 4/10 I'll admit, it is pretty hard to make a story for a clicker game, but I also noticed that you didn't really have a theme for your game either. If there was a consistent theme (like Scratch in Scratch Clicker, or cookies in cookie clicker), that would definitely add to your score here.
Coding: 10/15 I couldn't find any glitches or bugs, but the only thing I would recommend is having the CPS add to the Money all at once. I noticed how there were different broadcasts for different buttons, but that meant it looked pretty chaotic in the Money variable. If there was one sprite that waited once a second and added the money all at once, that would be nice!

Total: 47/100 This is off to a great start! With some more themeing (or even a story? That would be awesome ) and some rebalancing, you could easily get this game to a Good Badge! Just put in a little bit more work and make it stand out from the other clicker games on Scratch and yours is bound to be one of the greatest!

Review of Avoid ‘N’ Dodge by junwoo4444
Review by JakeTheProgrammer
Entertainment: 6/20 Another meme game? AWESOME! (You really like making games from memes lol) This game was pretty at first! Learning a whole bunch of different attack patterns and learning how to avoid them was pretty fun! I do wish that there was a replayability factor in this game. After playing for 5 minutes, I have learned all the attack patterns and I was able to have scores well above 100 points pretty easily. I will be honest and say that this felt more like a minigame than a full out game. Even adding attack patterns to this still will make it seems just like a minigame. To make this more fun and have people playing it for more than 10 minutes, you should add an incentive to play again! Give me an adventure/story (this could be a final boss in a platformer of some sort), arcade-style gameplay (making it faster and harder to play, get points to unlock skins or more elements to the game), or something else to make me want to play more and more.
Creativity: 11/15 Now, I'm not a meme expert, but it definitely seems that you have made a game completely based around memes! That's yet again, a nice creative twist to the game! Asides from that, I have seen games similar in playstyle to yours, so adding a creative twist there (changing up the genre, adding an interesting story, etc.) will increase your points here!
Sound: 6/10 The sounds were awesome! I loved the music and the sound effects here! I can definitely tell you put a lot of effort into that! The only suggestion I would add is to add a sound for pressing the start button and a sound effect for when you die. Other than that, add more features to the game, and make sure those features have sounds as well!
Graphics: 9/15 I loved the graphics as well! The consistent theme of vector graphics was amazing! I could only suggest to make the menu screens more interesting graphically, but other than that, add more features and make sure those features have nice vector graphics as well!
Ease of Use: 9/15 Remember to add instructions in-game. This could easily be done in the menu! Asides from that, making it so I could move diagonally would definitely help, as I expected it to work and lost at one point because I only moved to the left!
Story: 3/10 You had a nice, consistent theme, which is awesome! But, I do think that there is possibility to either add a story to this or at least give me a reason to why memes are attacking me! (Maybe through a cut-scene of some sort?)
Coding: 10/15 There were some glitches I found while playing the game. For some reason, hugging the edge of the screen would cause damage to me. I couldn't exactly tell what was going on or what attack move was happening, but that's something to look at. Also, the sock looking things (yep, I'm not into meme culture) don't despawn when they have moved to the other side of the map, they just kind of chill out until they all despawn. This has caused me to hit them accidentally while hugging a wall, when I feel like this was unintended. (I do not know if I explained that well enough or not, let me know if this was confusing XD). Other than that, the coding seemed good and I couldn't find any other glitches! Add more features and make it bugless to increase your points in this category!

Total: 54/100 I can definitely tell you've put in a lot of hard work into this game! Keep up the hard work, and consider adding elements to the game to make it replayable! The categories you suffered in the most were Entertainment and Story, so adding a nice adventure theme or changing up the genre in another way will definitely boost your points! I can't wait to see where this game goes from here!
