Here is the overview if you need it
Welcome!
Welcome to your first lesson! Sorry for the wait, I've been extremely busy recently. Anyways, let's get straight onto the subject!
How many things should I sell?
This is a massive part of shops. This can define whether a shop is successful or not.
Choosing a shop type
Most of the time, it's best to try to offer whatever you are reasonably good at. However, before you trot along and say “My art is perfect…” be sure to ask someone who you know will be brutally honest with you whether you are actually good at it or just have high self-esteem. If they say it's not, don't give up! I would use canva, GIMP or inkscape for art, make sure my reviews (and review template) are long and highlight important things, look at the code of some complex games and make sense of them and take some lessons to improve yourself. The broader the better, most of the time.
Everything shops
The majority of successful shops are everything shops or became everything shops early on. While not all shops are everything shops, I recommend them. They generally offer over 10 items and some offer up to 50 items. Many of them offer extremely fast service guarantees and can grow very fast. They are also very appealing to staff thanks to their wide variety of items. Here are some of their pros and cons:
Pros
Multiple thing shops
These shops have 2-10 items. They can be fairly successful however do not usually see the same massive growth rates as everything shops. Staff like them since they have multiple items and they do not get easily overloaded with orders so they are a reasonable choice for a new shop. A lot of the time these expand into everything shops quickly. The Space Shop was originally a Multiple thing shop until it grew to offer more items after a couple of weeks. Here are some pros and cons:
Pros
Single item shops
Perhaps the least successful type, they are very low in orders. Unless managed in a very good way and advertised like a machine, these are usually unsuccessful. Many have complained saying that ‘These shops are more focused and a lot of the time better quality’ which is partially true, but right now there isn't a market for them. However, good shop owners can bring these shops to success with time and effort. I would advise changing into a multi thing shop once you get off the ground, though. Here are some pros and cons
Pros
Shop areas
I'll quickly run through the different things shops can offer.
Art
Very widespread. Basically all everything shops and most multi thing shops offer this service. In single item shops these can be hard to advertise however in multi thing and everything shops they often become the heart of your shop. Art departments are usually the easiest to run since scratch has lots of good artists.
Code
Fairly widespread. Almost all everything shops offer them, and many multi thing shops do too. These are hard to manage in single item shops and everything shops due to the fact that many coders are specialised and as such cannot complete the shear variety of things people order. These are usually best in smaller multi thing shops who can gather more coders without the stress of running a single item shop. I will say from personal experience that this is one of the hardest departments to run.
Sprites
More or less a combination of art and code.
Reviews
Perhaps one of the easiest departments to run in everything shops, reviewing is great since almost anyone can do it. However, it is on you to make eure the review template is detailed and long!
Writing
From personal experience this probably isn't the easiest department to run, especially in single item shops where not many orders are made. However, this is probably the most fun department to run, as long as you like writing (like me – ask me on my profile for a fun fact about me and writing).
Ideas
A decently fun and easy department to run. Much like reviews, its easy to do, but doing it well is a different story. You should have a detailed order form to offer these, so that you can accurately gain what type of idea they exactly want.
Animation
tbh I have absolutely no idea what to put here
Advertisements
Pretty easy to run. When hiring people for this make sure they are decently popular to see their advertising capacity.
BBCode
For any experienced forumer this is a very easy department to run. Be sure to check their scratchblocks knowledge before hiring!
Generators
LED signs, you know the like. These are very easy to run so long as not too many staff have blockers for the websites that make them. I personally think it is kinda dumb not to just link to places to get them though…
Shop size
Another important part of shops. Some shops choose to allow themselves to grow like bananas (like what The Space Shop did) while others prefer to remain medium sized or small.
Mega-shop
These have completed many orders and barely get any days without orders. One could describe them as a department store. Lots of returning customers, lots of happy customers, lots of unhappy customers and lots of staff. Almost always use the everything shop model.
Medium sized shop
These shops generally get a few orders every week, and have a few active and helpful staff. One could describe them as a corner store in a town. Decently popular but not mass-producing, not an overly massive amount of staff, a few returning customers and mostly happy customers. These are pretty fun to run
Small sized shop
These are generally pretty new and get barely any orders (≤2 a week). They usually just have 1 member or have lots of inactive members (after the shop collapsing). They don't really have a single type of shop (everything shop etc.) which they usually are.
That's probably about all!
Thanks for reading! Your assignment will come sooner or later depending on whether you understand this well. Also, excuse how I used the term ‘multi thing shops’ I've just realised how silly that sounds

They generally offer over 10 items and some offer up to 50 items. Many of them offer extremely fast service guarantees and can grow very fast. They are also very appealing to staff thanks to their wide variety of items. Here are some of their pros and cons:
Pros
- Easy to expand
- If one service is lacking you can get more
- More attractive to staff
- Appeals to more people
- Grow quickly
- Can expand out of reach and get stuck behind on orders
- Sometimes you may have staff shortages in some areas
- Can lead to bad reviews on things which you're bad at
Multiple thing shops
These shops have 2-10 items. They can be fairly successful however do not usually see the same massive growth rates as everything shops. Staff like them since they have multiple items and they do not get easily overloaded with orders so they are a reasonable choice for a new shop. A lot of the time these expand into everything shops quickly. The Space Shop was originally a Multiple thing shop until it grew to offer more items after a couple of weeks. Here are some pros and cons:
Pros
- Grow reasonably fast but not uncontrollably
- Easily expandable to everything shops
- Good for staff activity since they keep getting more things to do
- Not as fast at growing
- Stubborn owners who don't expand it may lose their shop
- Not as broad of a range of services
Single item shops
Perhaps the least successful type, they are very low in orders. Unless managed in a very good way and advertised like a machine, these are usually unsuccessful. Many have complained saying that ‘These shops are more focused and a lot of the time better quality’ which is partially true, but right now there isn't a market for them. However, good shop owners can bring these shops to success with time and effort. I would advise changing into a multi thing shop once you get off the ground, though. Here are some pros and cons
Pros
- Easy to manage
- In some cases they get lots of staff
- Barely any orders
- Have to bump often
- Staff easily get bored and become inactive
- Requires lots of patience to become successful

Hi! I am going to take down the website. The reasons for this are 1. The layout I used is becoming too much maintenance and could ruin the GCSU reputation (it was only an example anyway) 2. It doesn’t serve the purpose it was meant to.
Hope this is ok,

ReviewsWhile anyone can do these two easily, in my opinion it is medium to do well. For ideas the hardest part is to get the idea running. For the best results I scour the person's profile for ideas on what they like, then go from there. I also usually draw a few quick sketches to plot out the key points in a story. For reviewing you have to carefully examine the project and give your opinion on it. You have to provide ways the project can improve, and you have to make sure you aren't pointlessly being harsh. You also have to make sure you wrote enough for the project's review so it won't disappoint the person who is receiving it. Also I personally recommend that instead of using a review template you write down a list of things to look out for to review then start writing the review from there or whatever pops into your head first as it is kind of, out of placeish maybe, when you see that half of the sections of a review say N/A. There is also the chance that there is so much in a section you should split it up into smaller sections or there is enough for a section not on your list/review template. You also have to keep your numbers consistent or they would lose value, something I kind of struggle at. But that is just my opinion.
