Adding LAYERS and ONION SKIN
I really like to animate, but I find it quite hard without the use of layers, or onion skin. I trust that most of you know what that is, so
I won't explain them. For us artists of SCRATCH, Layers would be a useful addition so instead of manually erasing sketches, and “skeletons” (as I call it) we could just delete a layer, or hide it. Onion skin, is what I would rather have though. For me, animating here is like, 1. Copy costume, 2. Make some changes for the animation and then erase EVERYTHING else. With onion skin we could just get a whole, blank 2nd costume and trace, without erasing anything.
If there are these amazing scripts, that can make things move, float, work, then I'm sure you can fit in some layers, or at the least onion skin.
I'd like to thank anyone who took the time to read this, and even more thanks if this really happens in the next few updates.

Could you please explain what you mean by the term, “Onion Skin”?

Adding LAYERS and ONION SKIN
For all those who wish to know what onion skin is, I'll try my best to explain. For example, say you drew a drawing on one costume, then added another completely blank costume (not duplicating the one before). Then if you turn onion skin on, the drawing from the last costume, or, frame, is shown with a very low opacity, which means its very light. You can simply trace over that shadow (as I like to call it) and make your animation changes. Once you turn onion skin off, the lighter version of the last costume disappears, leaving you with the one you traced, without having to do any erasing. So you repeat that again and again until you have the amount of costumes you need to make your animation. No worries, nothing bad happens when you use onion skin, like any deleting or stuff like that. For other animating websites and apps, I find onion skin MUCH easier than duplicating cotumes and earasing the things you haven't changed.
If you didn't understand what I said, then theres google, or an amazing animating app for mobile devices ed Flipaclip, which would very well demonstrate how onion skin works.

I have no Idea what your trying to explain (don't really want to read) but;
I would like to have layers in the paint editor, yes. I just use a program that has them open in another window.

Oh, I see. Yeah, the Scratch editor isn't much better than Paint.
Hard to draw anything near realistic in it.

In vector there are layers!

From what I gather Citykat isn't talking about layering, they're talking about a nearly-transparent clone of the previous costume at the back of the screen which doesn't interact with the editor in any way, that you can turn on and off. I agree it might be pretty useful for animators, but I can also see it being one of those suggestions that isn't 100% necessary and which goes against Scratch's principles of simplicity.

Instead of using onion skin, why don't you just go vector and then duplicate. The splines then mean that you can easily change the shape or position of an object.

I don't like erasing the lines that are not used for the animation. It takes too much time, and its much simpler to use layers.

It makes the drawing before that you just drew in your previous frame visible in slight trancparency! (Only us animators know the True power of the Onion skin)

So basically there's a replica of the last costume with a low opacity (around 70 ghost) appearing above your new costume, which you can use as a template to draw a new frame? I guess support (cause it's getting a lot of people angry right now), though I gotta warn you that Scratch is not 100%ly designed for animating. Maybe this feature could be accessible through shift-click edit or a hack?

Agree…Onion Skin is something I wanna use when I draw without using the shaping tool
when I receive [Onion skin v]
set [Onion Skin v] to [On ]

Suppport. Maybe I'd actually enjoy animating with Scratch if I could see the previous costume while I'm drawing the current one. It'd probably be helpful to things that aren't animation too, like, if you were drawing a different version of something and needed to look at the first version of it to make sure that everything matches up, like, for a game or something idk

Bitmap could really use layers, yes.@Ninkacho, bitmap will NOT have layers, as, hence the name, it is just a map of bits.
