Something like 128x128 or 256x256. Basically, it just needs to be a small square (first dimension matches second) less than 1MB in size. I recommend 64x64 as least dimensions and 256x256 as highest dimensions for best results.

The largest icon size used (the forum icon) is 90*90 pixels, but it scales smaller in other areas (such as the icon for comments, for example). So long as the image is a square and scales down to 45*45, you should be okay.

Well, it should be a square of any size. If you upload a rectangle, then it will resize into a square so it might be a bit cramped. Hope that helped!
