title explains it all

my personal top 10:
10. Baby Driver (the story isn't the greatest, but the directing, editing and music all make for a great and original action film)
9. Logan (the best superhero movie since the dark knight, wasn't expecting to like it as much as i did given my dislike of superhero movies, but the western style and the emotional weight it carries make it quite fantastic. i just kind of wish they got rid of the wolverine clone part, it makes for a rather stupid metaphor)
8. The Square (absolutely hilarious and contains great, if not subtle, social commentary)
7. Paddington 2 (pure joy condensed into 2 hours, a perfect family film)
6. Blade Runner 2049 (surprisingly even better than the original, contains some of the best visuals of the 21st century and a much improved story from its predecessor)
5. The Florida Project (a depressing portrait of childhood poverty that tugs at the heartstrings, with an incredible performance by willem dafoe, if not for the bizarre ending it could've gone up a few spots)
4. Dunkirk (a war movie purely about survival, not a single second is wasted and it never slows down. absolutely fantastic visually)
3. Good Time (one of the best crime thrillers in recent memory, filled with personality and interesting characters, the claustrophobic camerawork and the soundtrack give a major sense of anxiety)
2. Call Me By Your Name (the most beautiful love story of recent years, the slow pace gives the romance time to breathe, plenty of subtlety in the performances and direction that really helps it)
1. The Killing of A Sacred Deer (highly disturbing and highly memorable, a film that kubrick would make if he was still alive)

Update:
Last night I saw The Shape of Water and it is now my No.1 movie of 2017. It's a film that appeals so much to me and is so perfect that I couldn't help from giving it a 10/10. It has a lot of things that I love to see in films (fairytale atmosphere, quirky romance, wholesomeness, disturbing stuff, cold war setting, terrifying villain, a well-written friendship, directed by Guillermo Del Toro) and the performances are so great and it's so well shot and I just loved it so much and I can't wait to see it again.

More teenagers enjoy R-rated movies than you might think. Didn't you know that teenagers are edgy?

1. I loved Blade Runner 2049 and consider it to be my favourite film of all time so far. Villeneuve cements himself as a great director with this movie. It is one of the rare sequels which are better than the original. In the original, the visuals and music is nice but it's rather uneventful - Deckard literally walks around and waits for things to happen to him. In the sequel, although it is paced quite slowly, the story has a stronger sense of direction and is more interesting the the second one. Additionally, the visuals and production design in the sequel are astounding, and I'm very sure Deakins is going to get his Best Cinematography award at the Oscars this time around!

However, for some reason, some people trash this movie for some reason. If you thought that extreme sequel bashing was an activity only limited to Star Wars fans, you're wrong - there are a vocal minority which really dislike this for reasons I find rather ridiculous, e.g “the production design is too bland” or “the cinematography is too bland” or “the story sucks, Blade Runner's story is amazing” or “the pacing sucks”.

2. I also liked Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri quite a bit. I reckon McDormand is going to win an Oscar for her role. The movie's script was unpredictable, in both where it went with the plot and what the characters said (I was taken off-guard by some of the dialogue, since I didn't think that any screenwriter would dare to have their characters say something so offensive though I wasn't offended by it personally). The characters were well-written, and the ending, though sort of unfulfilling, had a No Country For Old Men vibe to it (if you know what I mean) but less depressing.

3. Dunkirk was really intense. If you thought that PG-13/IIA (movie rating system over here in HK) movies couldn't be as scary as R-rated/IIB/III movies, this movie threw that misconception out of the window; the very first scene already scared me to death. I think this movie utilized the “don't show the monster” technique really well, and scared me more than if they had not showed the enemy. I also appreciated the fact that they made the movie relatively short - had they made it any longer, the movie would become too repetitive.

4. I liked Loving Vincent as well. Besides the amazing visuals (I've never seen anything like it before), there was an engaging detective story with some character development. However, the way the story wrapped up was as if they had used up their budget. Coco is still going to win Best Animated Picture no matter what, though (although I don't like it personally, I still think Coco is an amazing film).

5. I liked Baby Driver too. It's isn't deep or anything, but it's a really fun movie with witty dialogue, well-directed action and a well-executed concept (action synced to music perfectly).

If we're talking about movies I watched in 2017 but not necessarily made in 2017, I have a longer list (though not ranked):

- Sicario. Thriller about the war on drugs also by Denis Villeneuve (who also made BR2049, my fav movie of 2017) which I have grown a greater appreciation for with repeat viewings. Roger Deakins' cinematography is amazing as usual, the suspense sequences are excellent, the acting is superb (especially Benicio Del Toro's) and the soundtrack is amazing (RIP Johannsson).
- Prisoners. Thriller about a man whose daughter goes missing, also by Villeneuve. The cinematography, the suspense/tension, the soundtrack and the ending is great (I find the swells very memorable for some reason), the acting is amazing (especially Hugh Jackman's and Jake Gyllenhaal's) though I've never sat through the movie as a whole for some reason.
- Alien. I've watched the sequel as well, but I don't like it that much. I found the atmosphere-building and tension-building effective and strangely soothing.

Speaking of movies, movie-hobbyists here in HK are in a rather interesting position. Although there are few people who really watch movies as a hobby (rather than watching them casually), it does come with an advantage; the number of good movies with cheap DVDs are staggering - for example, I got Sicario and Prisoners for ~$60 HKD (which is ~7.67 USD).

Of course, it's been nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
