I use the scratch sprite editor a good bit, and i have found that working with colors like white is kinda hard to do as the checker-board background involves white. My suggestion is to add a toggle-button that would allow you to switch between a dark editor, and a light editor.

in this image, its pretty hard to see the white box


in this one its way easier.


It doesn't need to be that dark, but its the best i could do i the five seconds my brain allowed before shifting its attention to other things

Why not have the background be animated? having it pulse would look annoying, so how about a moving gradient? (still, a speed that isn't too slow you have to wait to see, and not fast enough that it hurts your eyes)

But why animate it all together? You haven't put any benefit to animating it

I personally think the squares should be black and white. If the squares were gray, what happens if you are working w/ gray?

thats why i changed to OP to say that it would be optional, a light theme editor, and a dark theme editor could be switched out.

oops, forgot to say that. if the background is animated in the way i suggested, you can tell apart ALL colors from the background, and it doesn't need a toggle.
