JakeTheProgrammer's ULTIMATE GAME REVIEWS! (REOPENED!)

So You Think You Have An Awesome Game?
Maybe you want some ideas for improvements?
Or do you think your game compares to that of Griffpatch's?
Well you have come to the right place!

Image thanks to Space Shop :D
Oh, you want your game reviewed? You think you're up for the challenge?
Fill out this form, and I'll get to it as soon as I can!

Enter leaderboard:
I have read the ENTIRE post before asking for a review: (Yes or No)
Comments:

It's that easy! You may be wondering what this leaderboard thing is, I'll get to it later.
Also, only one project at a time! Wait for me to review one of your projects before you send another one! This will prevent some people from spamming 3 of their games or something like that!

**Please actually read the entire post before asking for a review, because I don't want people to be offended if their games don't get a good score! It just means you have a lot of room for improvement! **
Here's the template for how the review will look like.
Review of *Project Title* by *Username*
Entertainment: __/20 The most important aspect of a game is entertainment. How much did I enjoy playing your game?
Creativity: __/15 Is your game unique, or is it a cliche copy of another game style? Have I seen a similar game concept before?
Sound: __/10 If you have no sound, automatic 0. Did the sound fit well with the theme? Were there good sound effects? Music?
Graphics: __/15 Were the graphics unique, vibrant, and interesting? Or were they just pixelated lines without much thought? Were there awesome particle effects?
Ease of Use: __/15 Was it easy for me to learn the controls? Did I struggle with the instructions? Do you even have an instructions page?
Story: __/10 If your game has a story, how was it? Was it well thought out? Was it rushed? How did you express the story? If there isn't a story, how well did the theme of game stay throughout the game?
Coding: __/15 Was the game running smoothly? Any strange lag spikes? Any bugs that I found?

Total: __/100 My final comments go here and anything else I want to add
Badge: _____ Badge descriptions are below
Tokens: _____ Token descriptions are below

I will add a comment after each category, so you would know how to improve your game from every single one of those aspects. I will add your points and your final score will be from 0-100. Don't fret if you get below 80! I will criticize every aspect of the game, so don't expect an amazing score!
As you see, there is also a badge attached to your score, so you get the general idea of how your game fared compared to other peoples' games. The badges are assigned based on the final score of your game.
Here is a list of the badges and the scores attached to them.

BADGES
  • Needs Improvement Badge: 0-49 Don't be ashamed of this badge! You now have a lot of ideas of how to improve your game, so get working!
  • Good Badge: 50-59 Seems like I enjoyed the game! You've spent a lot of your time on this game and it's appreciated! Improve it to get a better badge!
  • Great Badge: 60-74 Great game! You've done an awesome job on this game, and I'll probably play it again multiple times! Still some things to improve on, but you're getting there!
  • Amazing Badge: 75-84 AMAZING! Has this been top loved yet? If it hasn't, IT DESERVES TO BE. You've done a fabulous job, and there are only very minor things to fix or add.
  • OMG Badge: 85-94 Either you're Griffpatch or you're the next best Scratcher in the world. CONGRATULATIONS!
  • Perfect Badge: 95-100 This is impossible to achieve. If you somehow get this badge, pat yourself on the back. YOU'VE DONE AN AWESOME JOB!

Looking at this, unless you've spent more than 100 hours on the game, I wouldn't really expect you to get above a Good Badge. Great Badge and beyond are very, very, very difficult to achieve, but when you do get them, congrats!

Tokens are similar to Badges, but not the same. Instead of tokens being assigned based on final score, I give them to you based on strong suits of the game and whether I think you deserve any or not.
Here are the list of tokens and how to get them.

TOKENS
  • Artsy Award You've obviously put a lot of time into your graphics! They are wonderfully made, I love the particles and effects!
  • Backstory Bouquet The story captivated me. I loved it so much! Umm can you actually help me the stories of my own games one day?
  • Comical Coin The game was pretty funny! I actually laughed a couple times in the game! LOL
  • Different Dime The gameplay was so unique, I was absolutely enthralled by this new idea! You could create a whole new genre of games after this!
  • Enthralling Emerald There was so much to this game, that I spent over 30 minutes playing it! You've done a good job keeping me entertained and captivated by the game!
Maybe if I think of another token one day, I'll add it. But for now, here's what I got.

You aren't only limited to one token, but DON'T EXPECT A TOKEN! They are only given if you've done an AMAZING job on aspects of your game.

Lastly, we've got to talk about the Leaderboard! In the order form, you get to choose if you want your game to be entered in the leaderboard. Not only willl the leaderboard allow you to see how your games stack up against other peoples' games, other people willl have easy access to the best games available! The leaderboard is in the next post for my convenience. Check it out!
In the leaderboard, the format will look like this…

*Project Name* by *Username*: *Total Score*/100. *Badge*. *If you have any tokens, I will list them all here based on the first letters of the token*

Here are some tips to help you in each category based on what I have seen grading multiple games
Entertainment You may be biased on your own game thinking that it's SUPER fun, but try playing it from someone else's perspective. If someone had only 1 hour of free time on the computer a day, how much time would they ACTUALLY spend on your project? And after beating it once, is it fun to play again? Unless you've got a very detailed, long game, make sure you implement ways to make replaying the exact same game fun!
Creativity If you created a platformer and I type in ‘platformer’ in search, would I find a project similar to yours? There are millions of projects out there, and is yours the needle in the haystack? Think of something to make yours unique from other peoples'. Give me some new idea I have never experienced before!
Sound Not only is background music a must-have, but also small sound effects scattered throughout the game! Pressing a button, going to a different screen, starting the game, and finishing the game are all examples of places that could use some extra sound. Sound really helps bring a game to life, and they aren't that hard to find!
Graphics Are your graphics visually stunning? Does moving my mouse over a button cause some reaction to the button? Does the scenery change and is better than just a blank rectangle? These are all questions you should ask to improve your graphics score!
Ease of Use Please put instructions in-game! I have taken off so many points here because it is either impossible or very hard to find the instructions in the game! Instructions in the Notes section does not cut it! Also, are there any unnecessary keys I have to memorize to do actions in the game? Can you replace them with clicking a button in-game?
Story YEAH I know, some games just can't have a story! Well, have a theme for the game then! If you're focusing on future techno platformer, keep everything inside the game: sound, costumes, backgrounds to fit the theme! If you do have a story (which you probably should), a story should answer the following questions: Who am I? What am I supposed to do? Where am I? When am I? Why am I doing what I'm doing? Answering all these questions in a fun, short, optional animation would definitely help your score here!
Coding If there is any way to reduce the number of sprites or scripts, do it! Try combining multiple scripts together and see if that works. Also, reduce the number of ‘forever’ blocks and replace them with broadcasts if you can! For faster gameplay, replace <touching color> or <touching sprite> with other code, like <(x position) > (240)> instead. This REALLY helps make your game smoother and faster (trust me, I have experience!)

Well, that's it, ladies and gentlemen. Enter your games in this forum. Once I have received your order, I will comment on the game saying the review is taking place. Once I have finished it, I will link the review in your game. If you would like, you can put the badge, tokens, and final score on your game notes. If you don't like your review or don't want it up, let me know and I can remove your review from the forum. Also, if you take my advice and change your game, I will do a re-review of the game so you could see how I liked your improvements!

As you know, most Scratch shops are free. This one is as well! If you appreciate the hard work I put into making your review, I would suggest you take a look at some of my projects! I do this out of the kindness of my heart, but I would appreciate it if you gave me some of your time as well!

Thanks and Good Luck!

Comments: I guess I will not surpass 40 points when you review both versions of my game. In version 2.0, there are some glitches, like the one where you enter the shop while you are in the game over screen. That version also lags a bit (I think that happens because of the amount of broadcasts the sprites have)

Also, the main concept is not original (just a generic pong game with power-ups), and I think I can improve very much when you review my game.

JakeTheProgrammer's ULTIMATE GAME REVIEWS! (REOPENED!)

Review of PONG (V2.0.2) by Uniior
Entertainment: 6/20 Not a bad start for a pong game! With the addition of powerups, shop, and cloud high score, I was more entertained trying to beat the high score using those powerups. Could it be more fun? Of course, but this is a great start. The idea of hitting a ball against a ceiling for points is… unexciting. This almost seems like a beta to an awesome block breaker game or a two player tennis match with powerups though!
Creativity: 5/15 I've definitely seen games similar to this before. I have given you 5 points for having powerups in a tennis pong game though. If you can turn this from a pong game to something more creative, or maybe a pong game with a much larger twist, you would get more creativity points.
Sound: 5/10 Music seemed to fit in well with a casual pong game and the ball hitting the racket is another sound. Asides from that, there could be more. I honestly love it when even the most smallest actions have sounds, like if you added a sound when you open the shop, or select an item in the shop, buy an item in the shop (a caching cash register noise maybe?), or the 3-2-1 countdown could have some punch to it. Some minor additions to the sounds could definitely boost your score here.
Graphics: 4/15 The graphics definitely seemed pixellated to me. I do like the new version of the paddle more than the previous version though. The scenery could use more movement, like some clouds moving or something like that. Also, it would definitely boost your graphics score if you look into using a text engine to render the score, money, and high score. Also, the graphics seemed to not have a consistent theme. The Pong logo looks really nice and the grass looks smooth, but the paddle and ball look pretty pixellated (could be because you resized them too largely). I think it would be best to have a consistent flat design (as that's what's trending right now. Looking up “flat design game” on Google would help). If flat design doesn't suit your fancy, at least keep a consistent pixely design then. Another thing, having even slight graphical changes in response to the user selecting something always makes a game look better. Having the brightness change in the shop items when I hover over them adds some detail into the game which always makes it look a lot better. These subtle little hints really help! Add a couple of those subtle hints and look up some new costumes to get a boost in this category.
Ease of Use: 11/15 It's hard to go wrong on Ease of Use in a pong game. Usually it's arrow keys or mouse movement that controls the paddle. The only thing I would recommend is a simple instructions page in the game itself so the user knows how to get in the shop and how to move the paddle. Also, instead of pressing ‘X’ to get out of the shop, how about adding a close button on the shop so I don't have to memorize 2 keys? Adding instructions in-game and a close button for navigation would probably hit the ceiling in this category.
Story: 3/10 Well, pong games usually don't have a story. Tennis games also don't have a story. Kind of hard to come up with one here I guess. I'll give you 3 points freebee because even I don't know what kind of a story I would do for this game. If you do some drastic changes the gameplay (brick breaker?), adding an optional story would give you bonus points!
Coding: 7/15 A pong game with simple power-ups does not seem like it would require 147 scripts and 24 sprites, so I took a look in the code (good thing I understand basic spanish ). There are a couple things you could work on to shorten the code and reduce the number of sprites (the more sprites and scripts, the longer it takes to load). Some examples are combine some of the sprites that only show and hide variables. Also, you could broadcast “Shop Opening” and wait, then “Open Shop 5k”… The reason for this is that broadcasting “Shop Opening” could hide the stuff that isn't in the shop and show stuff inside the shop without having to receive each different type of “Open Shop” broadcast. You could do the same with the shop closing. Work on simplifying your code to score some extra points here.

Total: 41/100 Don't be ashamed of getting this badge! It seems you've only been on Scratch for about 2 months and you're making games I wouldn't have been able to dream of when I was that new to Scratch! Now you've got a lot of feedback from me, so when you look at each of the categories and improve upon your game, let me know when you're ready for a re-review! I can't wait to see how this game will turn out!

JakeTheProgrammer's ULTIMATE GAME REVIEWS! (REOPENED!)

Review of Legend of Zelda: Through the Lost Woods by faberc
Entertainment: 12/20 Wow, this game was actually pretty fun to play! I could imagine most people who happen upon this game will complete the game to the end. It was almost like a Zelda-themed puzzle game! So, why a 12 instead of a 20? Because it could be better. I could see this game going one of two ways. Make it a dungeon-based game, where Link has to solve puzzles to progress to the next dungeon, or making the world more expansive. Adding a lot more to the world would make it interesting to go explore and get new items! Also, like you mentioned, Link here is a pacifist, but not having combat makes the game feel like it's lacking something. Adding combat (even combat similar to the first Zelda game) would make it a huge improvement and adding different weapons and shields around the world would give an incentive to explore something. I could then imagine playing this game for an hour instead of beating it in 15 minutes. If you're really up for the challenge, having an open world AND dungeons would be spectacular (similar to Breath of the Wild).
Creativity: 10/15 It is a Legend of Zelda Game, so actually changing the game too much would probably hurt the game more than help it. I guess expanding on the current idea you have and making it better and better with some slight creative twists would help your score here.
Sound: 6/10 The sound was pretty good in this game. I liked the various sound effects and the music definitely made me feel like I was in Kokiri forest (from Ocarina of Time). I guess using the Lost Woods music theme would help here. Aside from that, when I got to half a heart, the constant annoying beeping sound of my health bar was pretty annoying, so making that quieter and happen less frequently would be beneficial. Also, maybe having some sort of options pane where I could mute those sound effects or music would definitely boost your score here. In addition, replacing the ‘pop’ sound when walking through the logs to something more… subtle and nature sounding (like footsteps on hardwood) would definitely help.
Graphics: 10/15 I definitely like the style of art in this game. I like the consistent use of that same style throughout the game. One thing though is that the health hearts do not fit in with the style of art. They are extremely pixellated, and when looking at Legend of Zelda Four Swords, their heart icons are not so pixellated and fit in perfectly with the theme. There also were some tiny little details that could be improved, like when Link would stand under a tree, sometimes the tree would cover him (part of Link was under the tree) and other times Link was on top of the tree. Fixing that could help as well. I will tell you I like the decorations on the ground (like the grass and dirt patches), that really helps make a game look better.
Ease of Use: 12/15 How much more simple could it get than using the arrow keys to walk? I don't think it can. It did take me a while to figure out how to walk through doors and logs (afterwards, I realized I should've read the notes section of the project). If there is some way to make it so Link walks through doors and logs automatically, that would really help.
Story: 7/10 The story seemed super simple, which isn't bad (think of Super Mario 64, Mario just wanted to get some cake from Peach), and I loved the comical ending! You were so close to getting a Comical Coin token, but in order to get that, I would suggest adding some other elements to the game that have some humor in them. If you do go all out and make this either a dungeon-puzzle game or more expansive, adding more elements scattered throughout the game (maybe in the form of more scrolls or some cutscenes?) would definitely help here. (Even removing the funny part and having only serious, deep story elements could earn you the Enthralling Emerald token). Developing the story more would definitely help you here.
Coding: 8/15 There weren't many bugs and glitches I could find, but I did find one. When you have the scroll open at the beginning of the game, Link could still walk around, and I don't think that should be allowed. I decided to take a look into the code to see how you did in that department. I'm not sure if this is your first game on Scratch or not, but the way you did the coding was incredible! Here's the issue, though. It really limits the ability for this game to expand. Having a sprite for each of the borders would make adding a new segment to the world pretty difficult. I also realized you did not seem to use clones or lists that much, and I would definitely recommend using those. Having 1 border sprite being cloned multiple times (and each clone having a local variable “CloneID” referencing their data in a list) would allow you to easily change the world by modifying some data in a list instead of hardcoding the changes. Also, consider using clones for the swords in the worlds and maybe even the thieves, so that you could have multiple thieves on one stage. The broadcasts for the border also seemed redundant. I would recommend having one broadcast called “grid change” and a global variable called “current scene”. Whenever a border receives “grid change”, use an if <> else block to see if the border should be visible depending on the grid. There weren't many bugs, but consider using some of the coding advice I gave.

Total: 65/100 This seems like an amazing start to an even bigger game. Changing the way some of the code is formatted and then expanding on your world could definitely make this one of the best open world (or dungeon puzzle explorer) games on Scratch! Keep working on it, you're doing an amazing job!

Comments: I changed my mind, I want you to review the older version (v1.2.3) of my game, just to compare it to the newer version (v2.0.2) (I think it will be worse than any of the newer versions, but I still want to compare it). I still need to improve some things in the newest version (v2.1), so please don't review that yet.

Thanks for the feedback! This was my first time doing something serious in Scratch. I've previously showed it to my students and had them create stuff but never tried to create much myself. I learned about variables and lists and broadcasting later on in this project and implemented them, but definitely still learning their power. I admit I got slightly confused with how to properly use clones, and creating a list and having clone IDs sounds really interesting. I'll have to look into that.

I will probably not make many more changes to this game however since my programming class is now going into C and Python, but thanks for giving me ideas!

Review of PONG (v1.2.3) by Uniior
Keep in mind the score for this game will be worse than the newer version.
Entertainment: 3/20 Without cloud score or a shop, the entertainment really goes down for this game. There isn't much to do in this game except try to beat your old score by hitting a ball against the ceiling. The random powerups do give a little excitement, but that's pretty much it.
Creativity: 3/15 I'll take 2 points off from this version because there are less powerups. Otherwise it stays the same.
Sound: 5/10 Same score in terms of sound as before. Music was good and the ball hitting the paddle gave a sound. The powerup noise also is a good sound to have. I guess because there isn't that much to the game, there weren't many places you could add sound. Add more aspects to the game (which I saw you did in the latest version) and add sound to them and your score will go up from here.
Graphics: 4/15 This is the exact same score as before. There isn't much of a difference from this version to the newer one, so the score here will stay the same.
Ease of Use: 13/15 I actually boosted the ease of use in this version by 2 points. With less things to do, it becomes simpler to play. For perfection, showing how to move the paddle before the game starts would improve your score.
Story: 3/10 Same score as before with the same reasons as before.
Coding: 10/15 You actually got more points here than before! With a whole lot less sprites and less scripts, there wasn't as much to criticize. Pretty much, the only thing I could think of is adding more to the game and looking into some of the scripts in the Tennis Ball. You have "if <touching >… else if <touching > … else if <<touching > and <touching >>". That last statement won't ever be true because the first ‘if’ will be true if it's touching Hitbox 1, so it will never even check for both Hitbox 1 and Hitbox 2. Rearranging the order of the Scripts would help there for sure.

Total: 41/100 Funny how with less to the game in the older version, the score was actually the same. Watch out, though, the entertainment score tanked and that is the most important aspect of a game. With the newer version, adding more features in the shop and taking my advice from the previous review will definitely help! Keep it going buddy!

JakeTheProgrammer's ULTIMATE GAME REVIEWS! (REOPENED!)

Review of knightsFight_vol.2 by PD_7
Entertainment: 6/20 At first, I thought the game was going to be slow and boring, but after I beat the first wizard, the second wizard started shooting faster! I then realized that there was a whole section for upgrades, and I upgraded my stuff! Phew, good thing you had those upgrades there, otherwise, I could have just left. After playing classic mode a bit more and beating the dragon, I decided to stop playing afterwards. Here's why. The two main reasons I stopped playing was due to the AI being too slow and the combat itself being slightly uninteresting. The AI definitely could've been better. They just sat around for about 10 seconds, moved to another spot, and sat there. If you could get the AI to move a bit more and act more natural, that would really help (if you struggle with stuff like this, I would definitely recommend going to another shop and asking for scripts there or going to the ‘Help With Scripts’ section in the forums). The combat also seemed slightly uninteresting. It took a really long time for the sword to regenerate, the sword moved pretty slowly, and the action just seemed bland. I DON'T want to falsely advertise, but a very similar concept to this game that gives it more of a punch is ‘Plasma’ in my Two Player Games. I would recommend you try that out and maybe adjust the speed of your gameplay to something a bit more fast paced. I didn't have a friend to play the offline mode with, so I took it upon myself to play against me! Immediately, I realized yet again, the combat was pretty slow and both players could easily dodge the swords of the other person. In addition, I only have a knight the whole entire game, and I could only customize their color pretty much. Imagine how awesome it would be for me to choose from different classes (knight, wizard, dragon…) and each one does something a bit different (like knight's could use a button to hold out a shield to block some incoming damage, wizards could charge up attacks for powerful hits, and dragons are slow but have a ton of health?). Maybe I would start out with the knight, but after going far enough in the classic mode, I could unlock these new classes to play in classic mode or even with my friends. Online mode seems like it would be an awesome idea as well, but I could imagine how hard it would be to make, and I probably wouldn't even recommend trying to do that until Scratch releases some new ways to manage Cloud data (Cloud lists plz). In conclusion, making the game more fast-paced, having new characters to unlock, and having the AI be somewhat more difficult would definitely make the game more fun to play!
Creativity: 8/15 I'll give it to you, you actually did put in a good amount of creative thought into this game. Asides from the sprites, I'm pretty sure you created everything and came up with all the ideas for the upgrades, achievements, and customizability. It still could've been better, and like I was saying earlier, I would love it if there were more classes to choose from and have the customizability be more unique instead of just changing the color of the shield and the feathery part of the armor. Also, the background for the menus and the battles themselves (strange that the background worked for the first fight but then was blank every other fight) could've been more creative as well.
Sound: 4/10 Alright, there are a couple things that could've been improved here. I see that you start the project in mute mode, but the user has the option to add sound to the game. I would swap that around. I think it's better for the user to start with sound and then have the option to mute. There weren't any sounds for pressing buttons, changing the menu pages, or even throwing the sword in the actual gameplay. Adding sounds to even the smallest actions really helps bring a game to life, so I would definitely recommend finding some nice sound effects somewhere and adding them throughout the game! The music for the game was okay, but it set the mood to a casual game. If you could use more epic music during the fights themselves, that would make the game feel more intense and energetic.
Graphics: 5/15 Probably one of the first things you should do to make this game better is to redesign the menus. It just seemed so plain and unexciting that it didn't really make me want to go through them. Adding some background color would be nice, making the buttons stand out more would also help. I do like how the buttons change color when you hover over them, but that just doesn't seem good enough. Make the menus POP out at me and make me interested to look at them. (Remember, you could always ask for a shop to do those graphics. I do not like designing graphics so mine always look so bad XD) Also, try to get a consistent theme going with your graphics. You have cartoony looking characters, but the backgrounds generally look realistic. I would recommend changing those backgrounds so that they also look cartoony to fit the theme. One thing I did like was how the screen blinked red when my health was low.
Ease of Use: 13/15 You did pretty good on this category. The controls were simple and easy to understand and you also had an instructions page IN THE GAME! Good job, that is one aspect of knowing whether a game was well-thought out or not! Pretty much, the only thing I would change is somehow forcing the player to know there are upgrades and forcing them to know where the instructions are, just in case. At first, I did not understand that there were pages in the menu until I accidentally hovered over the arrows. Making it more obvious would help. Other than that, make sure that if you add new elements to the game, that you add the instructions in the How To page!
Story: 4/10 There was absolutely no story, and I feel like a game like yours could definitely use one! Even just adding an optional story would be nice! (idk maybe the princess was kidnapped by some evil wizard and you're going to save her). I did give you some points here for keeping a general theme throughout the game. (Knights, wizards, dragons, witches, castles… that's all medieval magic stuff). Adding a nice optional story would definitely boost your score here!
Coding: 8/15 The only bug I found was when I played a classic mode the first time, there was a background. After going to the menu and playing classic mode again, the background was white. Other than that, I took a look into your code (that's probably my favorite part of reviews). Here are my suggestions. The shootKnight sprite broadcasted a message (power) times, and that seems kind of inefficient for me. I would recommend having a variable called “enemy health” and when the sword hits the opponent, do "change by ((-1) * (power))". Then do the broadcast and test if the opponent died by seeing if their health is less than 0. Other than that, I see many of your sprites are just buttons or numbers associated with the menus. I would highly suggest you take a look into cloning so that you only have one sprite for the buttons and one sprite for the labels. This would definitely reduce the amount of sprites and make things easier to add/remove because you don't actually need to add or change multiple sprites themselves for a new feature.

Total: 48/100 You were two points away from getting a Good badge! If you add a good amount of features to the game and make the action more exciting, I'm sure you could get the Good badge, and maybe even the Great badge! Keep up the good work, I could see that you have definitely poured in some time into this. If you take my advice, I'm sure you could make this game even more amazing!

So I took a look at the game, and I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to do or what my goal was. I honestly can't do a game review unless I know what I'm reviewing! Please add some instructions somewhere and I could get started on reviewing the game.

Ohh lol. Unfortunately, I only do game reviews. I'm sure another shop could do a review of your animation though!

I made a game called "The True Ninja". It may sound like a rip-off to @Will_Wams the ninja series but I made it quite a bit different. The second game is out is now out and in my opinion, is much better than the first. Click here to see some other games I made!

I am willing to help, as long as it is in my capability to do so. (I think I am a decent programmer but not the best artist).

When asking help (to me or anyone else), attempt first, if you encounter trouble, that's when you ask help. If I created your scripts, then it would be hard for you to understand what they do. If you attempted but it did not work out, you will at least have an idea of what each script does and it will be easy to identify the modifications that made your script work. TLDR; Try, and ask help if if it does not work out
