I've been wondering how the version numbers for Scratch are determined. Why wasn't Scratch 2.0 called Scratch 1.5? I also think it's weird how we got update 2.0 and now, without any other updates, we'll get version 3.0. Can someone tell me how the version numbers are determined?

We get another whole number change when there is a complete redesign of the editor.

I never though of that. But then, that brings me to a different question. Why did the Scratch Team first put the stage on the right, then put it on the left, and are planning to bring it back to its original position?

I don't know. It's probably just their graphic designers' personal preferences

Any major version update will change the version by a whole number, such as iOS 8 to iOS 9. In this case, they changed it from Scratch 1 to Scratch 2.
More minor but notable changes will be followed by a decimal, for example, iOS 11.2 or Scratch 1.4. Then more minor changes will be followed by another decimal and number (iOS 11.2.4)

Well, mega redesign such as IOS 11 brought the new dock style and control centre, and also the widgets. Oh, and screen recording.

However, the most recent update (11.2 introduces Apple Pay Cash, and bug fixes.

And an update could be named 11.11, which could fix a tiny bug.
