PS4 or Switch?

It depends on what you want. If you want power and the PS4's exclusives, then you go with PS4. However, if you want portability and reasonable power (I mean, 1080p 60fps is nice, but most games are at 720p 30fps or 900p 60fps with adaptive resolution) alongside some great first-party exclusives, then you'd go with the Switch.

Here's the pros / cons for both sides:

Nintendo Switch
Pros
  • Is portable.
  • Can easily be played with friends anywhere, even on the school bus (I know I've done a few Mario Kart rounds on them).
  • Has SD card compatibility, allowing for virtually unlimited storage.
  • Has a video recording feature built-in (albeit weak).
  • Has many great first-party exclusives, such as Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, alongside third-party exclusives like Project Octopath Traveler and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
  • Has lots of third-parties on board (except EA, but really, that's not a problem unless you love loot boxes).
  • Has third-parties already here, like DOOM, and upcoming Skyrim and Rocket League.
  • Has pretty much every type of game to appeal to certain gamers at this point in time; casual, competitive, puzzle games, action games, RPGs, first-person shooters, etc.
  • Multiplayer-heavy games, whether local or online, are plentiful and a main focus.
  • Upcoming Virtual Console for previous Nintendo games on previous systems.
  • USB connection with Wii U controller converter, allowing for any controller to work on the system.
  • The first-party games have amazing game design and concepts, and are overall really well-designed games (have you seen the ratings for Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey?).
  • Many first-party games don't take up much space. Despite the Switch's low system memory, lots of games can fit on it. I have 4 AAA titles right now, tons of screenshots, Zelda DLC, and two smaller titles, and haven't even hit 20GB in system memory!
(Joy)Cons
  • Screen can scratch easily; better get a screen protector!
  • Joy-Cons may not sync up at all times if certain objects are directly in front of it.
  • Many accessories are really expensive!
  • If your dock is a defect and has a bent front, it can scratch your Switch screen. Either get a screen protector, put a cloth on it, or saw off the front altogether.
  • Some screens may have dead pixels that are “not considered a defect”, but this seems rare.
  • Joy-Con grip may be too small for some people. If you don't have huge hands, though, it should work fine. If you do, then a Pro Controller is recommended.
  • The online isn't the best at this point. Hopefully it'll get better with the full 2018 release.
  • Friend codes as a primary method of getting friends.
  • Cloud saves are not a thing. However, system transfer is.
  • Doesn't have the most system memory. Luckily, SD cards exist.
  • You may be made fun of for having one instead of a PS4 just because people are heavily opinionated and have the age-old belief caused by SEGA in the '90s that Nintendo is for little kids.
  • Does not have backwards compatibility due to the cartridge-based system. However, the Virtual Console will hopefully provide these experiences later, and hopefully, when syncing with your Nintendo account, will allow games you already owned to be bought for free.

PlayStation 4
Pros
  • Is quite powerful, and is able to play almost any modern-day game.
  • Has realistic graphics on the majority of games.
  • Has all the violent shooters and action games you may enjoy.
  • Has a couple games for kids, like Crash Bandicoot and Little Big Planet, as exclusives.
  • Many people own it at this point in time, and it may be easier to find friends to play with who also own the system online.
  • Voice chat is integrated into many online games.
  • The controller is comfortable to use.
Cons
  • Is not portable (unless you try really hard). It's an at-home console experience, and you can't play it on the car, bus, etc.
  • There aren't a whole ton of kid-friendly experiences all over the PS4. Many games are aimed at an older audience.
  • Many games have DLC or micro-transactions that can break online multiplayer experiences.
  • You need to have more than one controller for local multiplayer.
  • Does not have backwards compatibility with pre-existing games (though there is an online service for that).
  • Like any system, errors will occur.
  • The PS4 uses internet connection a LOT; don't expect to play many games if your Wi-Fi cuts out.

    ——————————————–

Overall, it all comes down to personal preference. Again, if you prefer an at-home console experience with lots of power going into your games, the PS4 is for you. However, if power doesn't matter, but instead you want fun experiences for both casual and competitive players and you want the portability, you should get the Switch.

PS4 or Switch?

It really depends. If he wants a lot of 3rd party games, I'd say PS4. If he likes Nintendo games/more family-focused games, I'd say Switch. It all depends on his preference. Currently, the PS4 is cheaper, as it's about $250 with a game, whereas the Switch is $300 + a game for anywhere from $30 - $60. Honestly, if he's into shooters and indie games, I don't have one, but the Xbox one might be a good choice, at about the same price as PS4. Like I said, it's all about his preference. Of course, the Switch has some great Indies, so I guess take a look at the libraries of some games before making your decision.

Of course, another factor may be what console his friends have, so he could play online with them.

Sorry for the long/double post, but hopefully this helped you out.

Neither. He should get a New 2DS XL since it's such an improvement from the original 2DS and you can get it for such a great deal

I accept them for their differences, they're for 2 different demographics both with great games(I'd love to try out the Dark Souls series along with Horizon: Zero Dawn some day)

That's because Nintendo somehow has the talent of being REALLY good at compressing software

Cost, mainly. For me there's also the lack of outlets AND free time. I just choose Nintendo since my parents wouldn't question my decision(although me wanting to not play M rated games is more of a personal decision) plus there's more Nintendo games I'd rather play than ones on the PS4

Xbox One. Better graphics (in my opinion), better exclusives, best multiplayer (that's not even a fair comparison. Switch fails miserably at it.), and best overall games.

I'm a Nintendo fan and even I admit the Switch doesn't have good multiplayer.

BOTW is probably the best game on the Switch in my opinion. Cappy's fine but I like story in a game. What's the beat PS4 game? I have Nintendo bias so I wouldn't know

Nintendo only has Odyssey, BOTW, Arms, and Splatoon 2, whereas Xbox One has Cuphead, Super Lucky's Tale, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 3, and MANY more good games and exclusives. (Plus Xbox One has better multiplayer) The Xbox One is also backwards compatible.
