Great to be here and to keep #BAM4Scratch going from the #scratchBDX2017 conference.

For all the Kiswahili speakers that are able, there is great tutorial available here on how to join the scratch Kiswahili translation team by @rhysrose

Feel free to join the team to completely translate Scratch into Kiswahili to be able to reach more and more people.

Thanks for sharing! Is there a link where we can access the tutorial?

Welcome!

Glad to see that many have already started engaging on the forum!

In the spirit of #BAM4Scratch, what are your ideas? What initial steps can we do right now to ensure that we achieve this goal? How can each of us contribute? Feel free to share your thoughts, comments or suggestions!

Here's my two cents, I think it would be awesome if we can each run Scratch related workshops in our home countries! (I know some of us already actively do this) But the challenge can be to integrate something new that you discovered during Scratch Conference 2017! And if we can all do it in the same month, it can help create buzz around #BAM4Scratch.

There is no set mode of facilitation or structure; it can be up to the individual to decide how they will conduct it!

Thoughts?

One first Idea to make a start: Let's create a numbered list of ideas about “Scratch for Africa” and start a thread in this forum for each idea. The participation per thread than will show how importent this certain idea is to the community and will create the opportunity to build/join a group that wants to work for this idea.

Here is a short first collection of

“Scratch for Africa Ideas”

#001 Create a list of Ideas about “Scratch for Africa” in the forum and a thread per idea

#002 Create a Scratch-Wiki in Swahili see Scratch Wikis in other languages

#003 Create a Scratch-Wiki in Igbo see Scratch Wikis in other languages

#004 Enlarge the Focus from Scratch to POCKETCODE alias Catrobat. Because many African children and even teachers have no access to a PC/Laptop/tablet its necessary to have a “Scratch-Like” tool that runs on Smartphones. Smartphones are much more common in African countries than PC/Laptop/tablet. Even the future Scratch 3.0 will not run on Smartphones (mobile yes, but just tablets) and Mitch Resnick himself recommended to use PocketCode where only Smartphones are available.

Please feel free to enlarge this list!

This is the most important task to do. Creating scratch workshops is something we should look and this will indeed create a lot of buzz. I have already started and i don't intend to stop. Since we are thinking about Bringing Scratch conference to Africa, this will help alot.

Not just Igbo but also Yoruba and Hausa, Nigeria is a big country with a too many languages. But the most spoken languages other than English is the Igbo(East/South) Yoruba(West) and Hausa (North).

This is an awesome idea, places like Lagos, Nigeria using tools like Raspberry Pi. Laptop/PC/Tablets is popular here in Nigeria, almost every schools in Nigeria have some sort of computers. Some even use Tablets as part of E-learning. Some part of Africa, even Nigeria still uses the OLPC device which is capable to run Scratch 3.0 thanks to the Effort from the Scratch team to collaborate with Sugar Labs to make sure this happens.

I spoke with the Pocket Code and i am looking into that, so i am going to create a poll that will gather data of the most used device used for scratching and the less used. But i am sure over 90 percent of Scratchers in Nigeria uses laptop thanks to Schools, Summer programs ordinators, Hubs, Camps and Parents.

@samsongoddy: Thank you for your ideas. Because I think that many people will read your post above, I think it could be a good idea, to re-format it, so it is more easy to see where you quote and where you state your own opinion. I think the ideas list https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/273790/ should be made a sticky - it could turn into a forum directory.

About the language, Nigeria is a Big country, if not the biggest in terms of population in Africa.

The official language in Nigeria is English Language. But aside that, there are three major languages spoken in Nigeria (Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba). So these languages should be included.

Welcome!

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Hello, I am Fluffbunowl. I am a scratcher who cannot comment but I love making art and memes (animation memes or normal memes)! I am very weird and I like to draw weird things! I am very friendly I promise

I also love using emojis

I play school of dragons, minecraft, and lego worlds, I enjoy gaming and im very competitive sometimes so I rage quit- but i'm generally very nice so when i'm not playing competitive games i'm at least approachable

I've been on scratch since 2.0 and I miss the good old days, but i'm loyal to scratch even if the updates cause trouble, scratch has been there for me so i'll be there for scratch (though not specifically for the studio update that i'm against everything else about scratch is fine)! I draw using firealpaca and I use a trackpad so I have to have a steady and stamina full hand it can get very frustrating! When gaming I generally use the wasd keys and i'm so accustomed to it I can use then without looking at they keyboard and with very few mess ups! I'm left handed and my hands can get tired easily but when I put on music and I have motivation nothing can stop me as an artist mwahaha!

My favorite genre of music is electro swing, edm and electro (and some others), I like caravan palace, 11 acorn lane, noisestorm, lemon demon, the fat rat, dirty palm, and a lot of others!

My favorite tv shows/movies are gravity falls, attack on titan, my hero academia, Re:Zero, the owl house, httyd/rtte, hamilton, little shop of horrors, and a lot of others I forgot lol- I like anime, animated shows, and animated movies and occasionally live action movies.

I can't comment but I read your comments!

is Africa a language or is it another language that people speak in Africa?

This is my signature. It's really not that good. I don't even know why you are reading it. It is pointless reading this, and yet, here you are, reading every single word of it. Just stop reading my signature and go on with your life. You are just wasting your time here. Why haven't you gone yet? I have repeatedly told you to leave. You must not be able to read. But wait, you are reading this, so you can read. That must mean you are ignoring me. I don't like being ignored, but if you are good at ignoring things, why is it so hard for you to ignore this signature. I'm getting tired of writing words to fill this signature, so you should just give me a break and stop reading.

What's wrong with these blocks? There are zero mistakes because no round has started yet. Beware that some of the mistakes don't relate to the Scratch blocks below.
