It depends on a lot of things. the best thing to do is try not to get alerts at all.

Usually you get two warnings before a temporary ban. Generally your first ban will be about 3 and 1/2 days, so it isn't that long. If you do something really severe though, you might get banned immediately, and each time you get banned the time increases. Trying to get around bans with an alternate account will extend your ban time and may get you IP banned. If you carry one for too long, you will get perm-banned and your account will be deleted. if you get enough warnings you'll get a message saying if you get a warning again we'll block your account for 3 days or something like that
it only lasted 2 days for me though so idk

No, it really isn't. I haven't got a single alert in this account.

But on a previous one, when I was really immature and started flame wars over nothing, I got plenty of them.

Gettng blocked can depend on a lot of things - not just the amount of alerts. The severity of your alerts and the amount of time that has passed between them can all affect possiblity of being banned. For example, if you made a simple mistake (or got an alert for something your friend did also bUT THEY DIDN'T GET ONE. WHOEVER REPORTED MY COMMENT WHY DID YOU NOT REPORT MY FRIEND'S TOO. YOU GAVE ME A GOSHDANG UNNNECESSARY ALERT. okay I'm getting off track) once and got an alert, and did the same 6 months later, you're unlikely to be banned. But if you get caught out swearing 3 times in one month, yeah, you have first-class tickets down the Banned Train.

As for how many alerts before an account block - there's really no specific number. It all depends on how frequently they're being sent and whether or not they were for the same offense(s).

We're a bit more lenient with question duplicates - especially since we'll often close old questions. But I think this thread linked above explains the issue pretty well. Though the answer is complicated - it depends, and if you get an alert for something, you should do your best to stop doing that.
