Scratch for the 3DS!
You guys do realize you can get a Kindle Fire (that supports Flash) for $10 less than a 3DS ($169.99)…
The Scratch Team has a lot to do right now, including finishing the downloadable version, then working on cloud lists, the HTML5 viewer so most people can use Scratch on the go, the notification system, and some other stuff we probably don't know about. Maybe in six months they'll consider it. And by then, knowing Nintendo, there will already be another handheld game console in the making.

Scratch for the 3DS!
They already released it didn't they? No.
The 2DS (if you don't know what that is, look here) is going to be released with the Gen VI Pokemon games (X and Y) on October 12th. So by the time the ST could actually make a 3DS version, it would be obsolete because now basically everyone would have a 2DS instead.

Wow! I didn't even know of that. But I'm not sure if that's a smart move on Nintendo's part. No people with 3DS's will buy a 2DS, and my guess is that now people will buy the cheaper one over the 50 dollar more 3DS when they were going to buy the 3DS in the first place. They already released it didn't they? No.

And anyways, it took 4 years to fully make Scratch 2.0. They'd never spend that time on a 3DS Scratch.

anyway, they've got BASIC on the 3DS but it looks too complicated. if i ever get a laptop i will close this but still consider it.

Scratch for the 3DS!
I would LOVE to have Scratch on my 3DS! Don't say that!
I'm pretty sure that a 3DS would have the power to run a simplified version of Scratch that was optimized for the 3DS.Yeah, but how long would that take to make? And would Nintendo allow it? Would it worth it?
I don't know about the first two, but the answer to the third question is no. Sorry, but I don't think many people want to use Scratch on their 3DS (if they even had one).

Scratch for the 3DS!
The DSi can barely run animation software, and the 3DS can barely run an internet browser. I don't think an application that distinguishes code would ever work on these devices anytime soon.
Umm, Petit Computer anyone?
(Petit Computer is BASIC for DSi.)

On iPhone, Apple took down the app because they don't allow apps that interpret code. For Android, I don't know what's up, but at least for now I'm pretty sure it's not happening.

Scratch for the 3DS!
Let me sum this up.
1:What could it be worth? What would come of it? Would it be worth splitting half the scratch projects ever made in half? Half will be Pc, half would be 3DS. Would you enjoy playing a griffpatch game on a 3DS? Or a 3DS game ln PC?
2: Why would it be on 3DS? Is the most accessible console? Would working with 3D layers be the most accessible anyway?
3: Enjoy making your game on a touchscreen, with some pretty low resolutions, not to mention custom imported sounds, costumes ect. Would be hard to do, you'd have to import everything through either a browser, or an SD card.
It just isn't practical, and not to mention fairly useless.

Scratch for the 3DS!
The mistakes everyone makes:
1) Internet speed
I think it's pretty hard to press the start button on a computer. To transfer to another 3DS, use QR codes or Miiverse
2) 3D-ness
Who says there has to be 3D? The majority of 3DS games don't have 3D
3) New programming languages
IT'S MEANT TO BE EDUCATIONAL!!!!!!
4) Size
What's wrong with:
top screen: stage
touch screen: 3 modes - blocks, stage, ‘green flag mode’ (where you press green flag, stop sign and have the keyboard)
5) Processing power
There's a thing called a New 3DS (N3DS), which could have less blocks than the PC, but more blocks than an O3DS (old 3DS) version!
6) 2DS user discrimination
ANYONE with either a 3DS or 2DS will know that 2DSs have all the 3DS features except from 3D, which, as stated earlier, would not be necessary.
7) The Scratch Team's lives
Even if the ST don't make it, there's always Homebrew ( go to smealum.github.io/3ds for more details)
P.S. I wrote this from my 2DS

Scratch for the 3DS!
I know this is a bit outdated but I'll still respond to some of these quotes in case the authors come back.
This would be nice, but there's a few concerns about it:
- If there are security issues/bug fixes/updates, it would require a special (and new) department to work on it.
- Since 3DS's are kind of weaker compared to a full computer, would there be a series of limits to projects?
- Although Internet connection is available on 3DS's, I don't think they could handle it (like what mitchboy said.)
- In addition to the point above, one expectation would be a sharing feature, which might not be implemented.
- If there is a 3DS version, how would the editor/player work, like the dimensions, design, etc.?
Well, how about a Scratch Mod?There are already plenty of Scratch extensions, which are irrelevant to this thread/suggestion.
Scratch is using Flash Player, and 3DS can't support Flash PlayerThe original poster is suggesting an actual app/game that runs on the 3DS, rather than a unique Scratch site for 3DS users.![]()
Not possible. On a 3DS the resolution is too low, the CPU is too weak, and HTML5 and Flash aren't supported.Agreed, except for the HTML5/Flash point which I responded to above.
Don't you guys know they could do it (with some collaboration) and put it on Nintendo eShop? Besides, if they had to learn something completely new, wouldn't it be educational for them? Some people might just have a 3DS (and wi-fi) but no computer. It wouldn't be fair to have them pay a thousand dollars (or more) on a computer! And not everyone has a tablet!Answered to this above, but in short; it would be pretty complicated, require a new department of developers, Internet connection isn't completely well on 3DS's, and you could try to download the Offline editor if possible.
. . .let you download it for free on the Nintendo eShopI'm sure someone would like a profit off of this, however.
My Dream Scene of using Scratch for 3DSI guess you could make it so that arrow keys are equivalent to joysticks/buttons, or make it so that joysticks are incorporated with dragging/dropping.
One Thing.
How the heck do the joystick and butttons there work for scratch???????!
You wouldn't have to use them. just use the touch screen.Requiring the touchscreen for the entire game isn't a completely good idea, and I'm not just targetting you. I have lost a stylus, and I didn't greatly appreciate it when I couldn't play a game when I lost a stylus.
However, using the touchscreen would be helpful in terms of dragging/dropping, but also read my response above. You guys do realize you can get a Kindle Fire (that supports Flash) for $10 less than a 3DS ($169.99)…Kindle Fires don't support Flash last time I checked, and I think we should be looking at the 3DS specifically. Also, there is a HTML5 version of Scratch (as Scratch 3.0) in the works. I would assume the 3DS (can't check now) would have HTML5 support by now.
Read the stickyWell, that sticky is kind of irrelevant now that Scratch 3.0 will be written in HTML5 (read above) and that this suggestion isn't for iOS/Android rather for a Nintendo product.
12. Scratch on Mobile
On iPhone, Apple took down the app because they don't allow apps that interpret code. For Android, I don't know what's up, but at least for now I'm pretty sure it's not happening.
yes. Scratch for the 3DS. no flash required! stunning 3D effects!Fixed it for you (FIFY), also I think 3D layers would be too complicated and could be exploited.
some exclusive blocks:<[start, A, B, X, Y, D-Pad, Up, Down, Left, Right v] button pressed? :: sensing boolean>
(direction of control stick :: sensing)
<3D layer> :: more blocks
go to 3D layer () :: motion
That was rude, however they don't need to be part of the Scratch Team to develop this.*I WANT TO DO IT!!youre not the scratch team
The mistakes everyone makes:1) The start button on a computer isn't that difficult, and QR codes/Miiverse don't really have anything to do with Internet speed?
Snipped; read post above.
2) Agreed, however I don't recall anyone saying it has to be in 3D, apart from suggestions saying it should be.
3) New programming languages in terms of C++/C needed to script the editor on 3DS? That is necessary, however changes to Scratch (if that's what you're talking about) isn't necessary.
4) Possibly the editor interface could be on the touchscreen, and the player could be on the top (perhaps back right button could be used as start and back left could be for stop.)
5) We're talking about how much the 3DS could handle at once, but in my opinion, I think editing shouldn't be the issue, but running the projects possibly an issue, which brings up a new concern; what if it lags? Would the user have to close the game?
6) Covered in my response to #2?
7) If the 3DS version is developed by a non-ST staff, that's fine with me. It's just I think recruiting and developing may be out of the ST's way.
Phew! That was a long post. About 15 minutes to type!
One last concern; what about CC licensing? Wouldn't that be difficult with the 3DS?
*They would need proper licensing and Creative Commons approval in order to do so.
