BOO! Did I scare you?

Well, no, I didn't. But I tried!

I'm wondering if jumpscares are allowed on Scratch. First of all, let me just say that there are THOUSANDS of projects on Scratch that include jumpscares (just type in FNAF and you'll see what I mean). But, someone recently told me that they weren't allowed.

Are they okay if a warning is put in the instructions? I guess it would spoil the fun, but it sure beats getting reported.

So, are jumpscares allowed? What are the jump scare “rules”?

Thanks!

No, jumpscares are not allowed. Everything on scratch has to be appropriate for about 5 and up. So yeah, they're basically zero-tolerance.

Well, apparently they don't enforce that rule very well, because so many projects include jumpscares.

Anyways, thanks for answering my question!

Just make the jumpscares comedic, by using a cartoony picture and funny scream. To be on the safer side, add a scare warning.

Well, no, unfortunately. Try to think of it like this: Would you let a 6 year old who wasn't into getting scared see it? Scratch is for all ages, so there's even a possibility that a 1-year old might click on it and get scared. If you insist on doing it however, like PrincessPanda_test said, make the scares comedic and not actually scary. Like a jumpscare might involve someone simply saying ‘boo’.
Hope you have luck on your project!

Thanks! I didn't really make a jumpscare project. Although it's a little creepy, it's scary in a funny way and doesn't include an actual “jumpscare”. You can view it here: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/121200534/.

It's hard to enforce such rules if no one is reporting them, eh? So remember to report when you encounter them.

OOH burn… That's funny how people complain about things but don't do anything about it themselves to help.

I agree, so many people don't report things that they should, so it makes more people think it's OK, then more people do it, and so on. It's like not giving credit or adding ideas to a remixed project. So many people don't care, therefore the above cycle starts happening. Which is why I take things that may be eligible for reporting very seriously.

Something like this is okay. In other words, only use an unscary image and funny scream. It's okay for a surprise in a project.
