Maybe have only icons for mobile devices (since Scratch 3.0 is using the HTML5 player) so that there's more room to drag blocks around?
OK, but i think it's good to have the icons on by default, and can be turned off, mobile or not (It is a good idea to have icons so that mobiles will have bigger touch)
How would this be enabled/disabled? Through the editor or account settings?
Maybe they can make a SETTINGS window!?
What else would be in this dialogue? (since only having a dialogue that only displays a checkbox for displaying icons or not seems kind of useless)

A editor dialogue (UI color, block color, icons, etc)

I don't know the rest. I'll make a separate topic about it.

I actually am in favor of this idea. Current ISO standards use set symbols instead of Americanized symbols using words and different pictures for the same thing. Doing this idea helps encourage use for people who don't speak English (as translation is somewhat an issue), and most kids may be somewhat illiterate. Pictures are pretty easy to remember and recognize.
If kids are illiterate then how would they read the text on the blocks?

They use ScratchJr, maybe?

EDIT: If you're concerned about design, you might want to check out what Scratch 3.0 looks like first
Scratch 3.0 Design quote: THAT'S SOOOOOOOOOO HORRIBLE!!!!!! by the way, where did you find the link?

I feel this is a preference that wouldn't be used much, so I don't support this as a standard on the website.

However, I'm completely cool and I would try an userscript that does just this.

And i'll close this.

That's not fair, you're trying to block posts not in favour of the suggestion.

For the suggestion itself, I don't support. It would wreck the design without any real benefits. If this suggestion is ever implemented the icons should be off by default.

Seems harmless enough and I guess it could technically count as a tiny bit of colorblind accessibility. It's weird how the extensions currently have proper icons and the built-in categories just have colors. I just think it's a nice idea all around.

I prefer the simple color circles but I don't agree with people saying it will destroy Scratch, it's just a simple change.

Personally, I don't care if this gets implemented or not.

Wait, does this count as necroposting or something? I mean, this wasn't rejected as far as I know but this topic is as old as mid-2017. Maybe start a new forum topic for this?

No, it's preferable we continue discussing this on this topic. (I own the Suggestions Directory and every topic that closes or gets merged is more work for me).

Ah, okay. In that case I'll contribute my thoughts on this topic. I started this but it was so old I feel like I need to refresh it.

I feel like there should be icons on the block palette because it feels more visually appealing than just colors, and, as another person said, it would implement colorblind support.

For people saying that this can wreck the UI, I think it's because of the reputation that Scratch's UI became more bloated and more and more like a toy. I see were this is coming from, as when Scratch 3 came I saw a lot of complaints that the UI was too bloated and would draw away professional users.

But as @the2000 said, extensions already have icons, so there's no reason for normal block categories to not have icons, unless extensions were given icons to distinguish it from regular blocks because extensions are all the same color.
