Alternative to the "Discuss" Tab on the Site Navigation Bar

The forums has many roles:

A place to just chat amongst Scratchers

A place to ask for help

A place to report bugs/problems

A place to showcase mods

A place to discuss future versions of Scratch

A place for things at the Scratch cutting edge

A place for Scratchers to ask - where do I go next ?

Now it is easy to understand that MIT have decided the pro's of the forums are outweighed by the negatives (and keeping it as a safe online place is a tough job that could require a lot of work - work that could be directed into other Scratch activities)

What the BIG problem is the lack of “trust” (for want of a better term) in MIT being open and honest about this.

Because even if header space was a big issue for them, sticking it at the very bottom of a very long page was either a very thoughtless action or a deliberate one.

I don't believe that it was a thoughtless action and I'm very disappointed in the way MIT have carried this out.

A lot of the people on here are young persons (with a few of us old Scratchers that teach young persons) and I believe they deserve to be communicated with honestly and openly

Simon

PS All my last comments are speculation - but that's what people do when faced with cognitive dissonance situations that don't have public rational explanations

That already exists
Sorry for the late reply, but could you give me the link of the extension?

#Bring_it_back! CAUSING PROBLEMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMS!
makethebrainhappy wrote:

I would suggest putting the “Forums” tab or “Discuss Tabs” on the right hand side of the messages header. Currently no link/text occupies this space. This is a compromise because

1.) While it make's the general forum page easier to access for users while browsing messages, it does not hinder the promotion of project creation, especially after one has viewed someone else's project.

2.) It make's it much easier for New Scratchers to find the forums. The messages tab is the same place where they go if they need to accept a Scratcher Invitation, so it is logical that they should need to access to the same tab in order to find the forums.

3.) It would not change the size of the search bar in any way.

4.) The Scratch Team made this change to “get new users started on becoming full fledged Scratchers!” Adding this compromise would not hinder this mission in any way.

I don't understand why you people persevere for an option that has a minority in it. Scratch is about programming.
Discussion forums is not to be discovered, and doesn't need to be.

People can ask questions on each other's profiles, and all evidence says that small small small portion of Scratchers who use the forums are so insignificant to 99% of Scratch. (Wiki)

ST did it because of majority. If you don't like it, you'll have to live with it. Do you think every decision a government made was 100% agreed upon?
Thank you. Someone else who agrees with me.
I mean, seriously. The only people mad at this update are people who use the discussion forums frequently(as they're probably the only ones who actually noticed the change).
They're the people who instead of using Scratch for Scratch usually hang out on the forums most often.

The ST do these things because all things about the website say otherwise.
A few reasons why they should keep the discussions page:
  1. For new scratchers who haven't made friends yet and want to ask a question
  2. For people who want to show off their projects
  3. For people who want to work together on projects
  4. For people who want someone to make art for them
  5. For people to discuss new updates
  6. For people to make friends
  7. For people who have bug reports (Most people don't want to work hard just to report a bug, they want it to be easy)
  8. For people who want to suggest something to be added to scratch
Not having the discussion tab encourages scratchers to only go on the forums they are already following, causing a lack of people answering questions, joining collaborations, etc.

Maybe the discuss link could be for Scratchers, and the tips link for New Scratchers.
if <(user type::sensing) = [Scratcher]> then
show [discuss v]::looks
hide [tips v]::looks
else
hide [discuss v]::looks
show [tips v]::looks
end

But isn't a requirement for becoming a scratcher to have a certain number of posts?

No, per @Lego-Lovin-Program.

50% Support, because I still want to be part of the #Bring_It_Back group.

It's not a requirement. It only helps you become a Scratcher quicker.

Either way, I'm still saying no to this type of idea. Besides, people want Discuss to be back so that New Scratchers can find the forums easily and get help, right? And someone suggest to hide the forums from the new users, and what if they need help?

I need help. I click on Tips. I see lots of starter projects, but not the thing on the problem i have. Okay, so i scroll down to Questions and see the link to Help with Scripts. I click it and get help.

I need help. I ask someone who I am following. They help me.

I need help. I ask someone who commented on my project. They help me.

I need help. I make a project about my problem and share it. A helpful Scratcher sees my project and helps me with my problem.

I need help but don't seem to be getting it. So I scroll down the webpage and see all the links I can try. Under Community, I see the Community Guidelines I agreed to. Below that, I see Discussion Forums. And below that, Scratch Wiki. I can see that there are lots of ways to connect for help. And these links are on every page of the Scratch website.

So if I can't find help from a helpful Scratcher by asking on a project or profile, or sharing a project, I will surely find help one of these other ways.

I think the idea to put it in messages is good, but I think that having it in the top bar is much better and easier. New scratchers might not know how to go to discuss. I think they should change it EXCACTLY how it was and change tips to help and about to discuss.

#BRING_IT_BACK

when scratch updated the top bar
i wanted the old one back and said [#bring_it_back v]

I don't really see how the forums and messages are related, so I don't think it makes any sense to put it there.

I support, because I think this would be a great new alternative. I used to think that bringing back the discussion tab would be a fantastic idea, however, now you have opened my eyes to the reasons the changes were made, so now I say no to bringing back the tab, and say yes to this new idea.
