Urge your local lawmakers to Restore Net Neutrality!

THIS IS A BATTLE FOR THE INTERNET'S FUTURE.

FCC Chair Ajit Pai—a former Verizon lawyer—is about to let Comcast & Verizon slow the
Internet to a crawl, and then force sites to pay for special “fast lanes”. If he does, giant
monopolies will control the Internet, forever. To stop him, we have to flood the FCC with
comments, and get Congress to oppose Pai's plan.

JULY 12TH: INTERNET-WIDE DAY OF
ACTION TO SAVE NET NEUTRALITY
JOIN THE PROTEST

They are Team Cable.

Cable companies are famous for high prices and poor service. Several rank as
the most hated companies in America. Now, they're attacking the Internet–their
one competitor and our only refuge–with plans to charge websites arbitrary fees
and slow (to a crawl) any sites that won't pay up. If they win, the Internet will
never be the same.

We are Team Internet, and we support net neutrality.

We believe in the free and open Internet, with no arbitrary fees or slow lanes for sites that
can't pay. All of the people, companies, and organizations below have taken a stand for
“Title II reclassification,” the only option that let the FCC stop Team Cable from breaking
the key principles of the Internet we love. And that's what the FCC just voted for.

Together, we defeated Team Cable.

Cable companies lobbied so hard. But we, the public, sent the FCC a message
so loud they couldn't ignore us. The FCC voted to preserve Net Neutrality, with
strong Title II rules that prohibit ISPs like Comcast from slowing down and
breaking the sites and apps you love.

Here's how we won.

But now Team Cable is back. Here's how to stop them.

FCC Chair and former Verizon employee Ajit Pai is determined to gut the net neutrality
rules we won. We need to convince our Senators to vote against his reconfirmation as
FCC Chair. Contact them now and then find a town hall meeting near you!

Tomorrow is the day we save the Internet.

Here's what we need you to do today to make sure we do.

If you have a site, all of your instructions are here.

Then, here’s where the rest of us come in. If everyone reading this email does this now, it will reverberate across the Internet, and send a strong message to the FCC and Congress that our hard-won net neutrality rules must not be taken away.

All the images are here. Or use this simple tool to change your profile picture on Facebook and Twitter.

We need as many people as possible to stand up tomorrow and get their friends to join them. The easiest and fastest way for you to do that is changing your social media profile picture on Linkedin, Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat.

Here’s why whatever you do to save net neutrality and the open Internet matters. Without strong protections, Cable and phone companies like Comcast would be able to:
  • Slow video streaming sites, causing your videos start and stop unexpectedly.
  • Add you new fees to your Internet bill. Imagine paying extra for YouTube!
  • Censor videos or content they don’t agree with, like political blogs.
  • Throttle any new sites or apps they don’t own or invest in.
  • Make your connection painfully slow, and charge you more to make it work again.
  • Force streaming sites like Spotify into a slow lane, causing them to buffer constantly.
  • Slow online gaming. Call of Duty would lag and glitch without paying more to your ISP.
  • Charge big sites special “prioritization fees” and slow down everyone else.
  • Take you out of the driver’s seat, and control what you see and hear online.
  • Make the Internet look a lot more like cable TV.
  • And, worst of all, become the first gatekeepers of the Internet in US history.

Net neutrality says we get the *entire* web without interference – no gatekeepers, no tollbooths, no slowlanes.

This is why it is considered the First Amendment of the Internet. It protects our free speech in the digital age.

It’s so important we speak up tomorrow. We must show Congress and the FCC that when it comes to the Internet, we stand united. And if we’re loud enough, they’ll have to listen.

But this could all change if we don’t do our part to get the word out now.

Please take a second to change your social media avatar.

Or, if you have a site, app, or blog, follow these instructions to ensure the FCC and Congress hears our call to save the web.

Net neutrality is not a partisan issue. Regardless of your political views are or who you voted for, everyone who knows what net neutrality is supports it. And poll after poll confirms this across party lines.[1]

Without net neutrality, the government will give cable and phone companies free rein to shake down Internet users and websites for more money. And the ripple effects will be felt for years.

An entire generation of innovators have built their careers on the open web. With net neutrality in place, you just need a good idea and a decent connection to reach millions.

There’s too much at stake here. Please, do what you can to get the word out while there’s still time. Change your avatar, and follow these instructions to message your community ASAP.

We have just under 24 hours to go to. We need to show Congress and the FCC that people from all across the political spectrum love the Internet and don’t want politicians to screw it up by getting rid of net neutrality.

We’re counting on you,

Tiffiniy and the whole team at Fight for the Future note from HoofEMP: this is not me

Hoo boy, didn't know it was today.

Honestly, though, why can't we go a year or two without some attempt to screw with the internet in some way?

Honestly I am debating whether I bet neutrality laws. I love the Internet and feel that it's unfair what these businesses are doing but at the same time, I am against the government regulating the free market as it can lead to just as bad scenarios in the future.

It's the FCC and Comcast trying to screw with the Internet, or, more specifically, Title II Net Neutrality. We're trying to defend the free Internet from them.

This week we made history. More than 2 million comments to the FCC. 5 million emails and 125,000 phone calls to Congress. And tens of millions of people reached – many of them hearing our message for the first time.[1]

This is what it looks like when the Internet comes together to fight back. But now we need to take all this momentum and turn it into serious political pressure, demanding that members of Congress take sides: Team Cable or Team Internet.

And after this week’s day of action, our organizing will be even more effective because so many more people now know what’s at stake.

We’re launching a wave of hard-hitting net neutrality billboards in key districts demanding that members of Congress declare whether they are on Team Cable or Team Internet. Will you chip in?

We know billboards like these will get members of Congress’s attention because we’ve done them before – and they HATED it.

After Congress voted to let ISPs sell our browsing history, we ran billboards holding representatives and senators accountable in their home districts. Since then, we've heard that these billboards – more than anything else we've done recently – really got under their skin and forced lawmakers to pay attention because they were so terrified of the backlash once their constituents learned what they'd done.

In fact, one member of Congress is so ticked off that their staffers are basically stalking us on social media.

These billboards will help keep the momentum going from the day of action and also provide needed air support for local on-the-ground organizing groups that we’re helping launch all over the country.

Together with our member-led grassroots organizing teams and the huge awareness we built in the day of action, these billboards could put our campaign over the top and save net neutrality.

We are not going to let members of Congress get away with trashing the free and open internet. Will you chip in today?

For the internet,

Hi,

Congress held important hearings today related to net neutrality. Click here to find out where your lawmakers stand and take urgent action to stop Internet censorship, throttling, and extra fees.

Last week, we made history. Millions of people took action to demand that the FCC respect free speech and drop its terrible plan to gut net neutrality protections that prevent monopolies like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from squeezing us all for more money, slowing down websites, apps, and services, and blocking our access online content. [1]

The Chairman of the FCC, Ajit Pai, is a former top lawyer for Verizon, and he’s made it clear that he doesn’t care what the public thinks – he just wants to give the giant Cable Companies that he used to work for exactly what they want: the power to control what we see and do online.

But our members of Congress have oversight authority over the FCC – and they have to answer to us: their constituents. We’ve just unveiled a “scorecard” so they can’t hide.

In the coming weeks, Congress will decide the future of our Internet freedom. Click here to find out where your lawmakers stand and demand that they defend net neutrality!

The Senate held important hearings on Ajit Pai’s confirmation this morning. [2] It was largely procedural, but right now is an important moment for us to show lawmakers that we are paying attention, and that we expect them to do their jobs and speak out against the FCC’s attack on our basic online rights.

If enough members of Congress speak out against Ajit Pai’s plan, he’ll have no choice but to slow down or change course. This the clearest strategy for defending the net neutrality protections that we have all fought so hard for.

We need to make sure that every member of Congress knows that if they side with Big Cable by supporting – or remaining silent about – the repeal of net neutrality, we their constituents will hold them accountable.

Click here to take urgent action to stop Internet censorship and hold corrupt politicians accountable for attacks on net neutrality.

This fight is just beginning, and we’re off to a strong start. More from us soon.

-Evan at Fight for the Future note from HoofEMP: this is not me

P.S. We’ve already raised $50,000 toward crowdfunded billboards targeting members of Congress who support the FCC’s plan to gut net neutrality. Click here to chip in!
