Why is Scratch called Scratch?
“Scratching” in the music world refers to putting bits of music together, like you do with scripts and sprites here.

Also the term “make from scratch” which means build from nothing, I do believe. While that isn't untrue, there's verifiable evidence that it was based on music.

Why is Scratch called Scratch?
It was originally called ITCH, but the Bad Word Censor wouldn't let them use the word, so somebody said “Scratch that!”
Then a light bulb flashed on above someone else's head. “Hey! That would be a good title! THAT!”
But THAT was voted down because it could be either a pronoun, an adverb, a determiner, or a conjunction and that was just too confusing.
An orange cat wandered into the room and said “Meow!” Curious about everything, the cat had to be swatted away from the keyboard after he walked across it.
Well, I guess you know the rest of the story.
