Political projects should be treated as N.F.E. UPDATE: Alternate proposal has been made

I have made an alternate proposal! : For for the users who strongly dislike politics, there could be an option to block political projects out, while for less concerned users, they could just not enable the option, blocking no projects. The same could go with religion. It's not that these things are bad, it's just that they can lead to irritation among people, taking away from the fun of Scratch.

Ignore the below, it is the original suggestion that was criticized intensely.
——————————————————————————————————————————————

Politics is something that divide friends and family, leads to fighting, and generally disturbs people. Despite these details, politics manages to slither its way into games, movies, T.V., schools, social media, the internet, etc., exactly the places where we don't want to see politics. How would you like it if you were watching a T.V. show that you really liked, and then the main character randomly starts insulting a certain politician. If you were of opposing opinion of this politician, you might not mind. But if you were a supporter or were neutral, you would be irritated or mildly irritated. In all cases, you would be irritated in some respect because your favorite T.V. show just stopped to talk about real-world problems and current events. You just want to watch T.V.!!!!

N.F.E. stands for “Not For Everyone.” A project is tagged with this if it has broken the community guidelines, or is inappropriate for the younger users of Scratch. N.F.E. projects cannot be accessed by users via conventional methods such as using the Scratch search engine. This is to protect younger users from inappropriate content on Scratch. There are many things/factors that make inappropriate things unsuitable. Politics can be seen as another thing/factor.

Politics has been the cause of many issues on this website. I would assume that it could lead to things like bullying and fights online, or being led to believe others' opinions instead of making their own. Politics is really something more fit to a mature audience, not little four-year olds on a kids' website!

If this restriction were to be implemented, projects, comments, and studios featuring a strong political bias that insult people of differing opinions would be banned, removed, tagged N.F.E., or be made inaccessible in some way.

Politics is a controversial subject, so please, do not let this post damage my reputation or something. Thanks!

This project is a clear example of politics on Scratch: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/100195079/

pretty sure a lot of TV shows have insulted trump in one way or another

mockery, critiquing, and complaining about politics is commonplace in media

you can't make your point with four year olds. Scratch's age target is 8+

no support, most of the time politics isn't inappropriate … occasionally it causes a few debates but not nearly as much as some other stuff that scratch lets on the front page .-.

Politics is everywhere. TV, ads, everywhere. Scratch removing these comments does nothing. How would this be implemented objectivly?'

No support. I don't like censorship. What about @ceebee's project about Warren? I think the Scratch team is ok with this stuff.

Why should it be NFE? People are allowed to have an opinion. And if we look at the stats, the signup age, not the current age of people using Scratch that were 4, is ≈35k people. Let's look at people who were less than 12 compared to 12+, ≈4.85 million compared to ≈15 million other users. I think that as long as it doesn't turn into a flame war, it's fine.

No support, politics aren't controversial as religion. Plus, you see political opinions everywhere in the media.

We already do this for a majority of political projects. If the project seems to be pretty politically edgy, just flag the project, and let the ST review it so the project gets the proper marking, easy-peasy.

Sadly, my forum signature was eaten by an evil kumquat.

Yeah, I sent that message with my first reply on this topic.

No support. Politics isn't inappropriate and it's fine as long as others' views are respected. If a project puts people down for disagreeing with the political views of the creator it can be reported.

This is like banning ALL FPS games just because they have a possibility of being inappropriate but it's perfectly possible to make an FPS appropriate for Scratch. Same goes for political projects.

Check out Life Raft Survival, my new advanced sandbox survival game with crafting, building, transportation, weather events, tropical storms, and more!

In the game you're stranded at sea after a mysterious crash and must survive in an unforgiving tropical island environment collecting resources and crafting, in an attempt to finally be rescued.

Okay guys, I admit defeat (I lied, I have made an alternate proposal!). I could continue to fight for my argument, but it's no use. At least I caught the attention of the Scratch Team, in my mind an impressive feat.

However, I have set a new goal- to get the most non-supporters ever! Wish me luck, and give me your reasons as to disapprove of my suggestion.

I'd like to thank the following people for strongly disagreeing with me:
  • @Scratchifier
  • @Blaze349
  • @Scratcher1002
  • @XenoCoding
  • @Blaze349
  • @PrincessPanda_test_
  • @cheddargirl
  • @Cub56

Oh, and also, I never actually specifically addressed any certain politician, I was trying to keep things very general.

Also, I have an alternate proposal: For for the users who strongly dislike politics, there could be an option to block political projects out, while for less concerned users, they could just not enable the option, blocking no projects. The same could go with religion. It's not that these things are bad, it's just that they can lead to irritation among people, taking away from the fun of Scratch.

Here is a reply that I was going to post but I ended up not posting it:

I respectfully disagree.

  • Nowhere in my post did I mention trump.
  • Resentment of politics in media may be common, but I have backed it up with several reasons.
  • According to the Scratch Community Guidelines, “Scratch welcomes people of all ages, races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities.” Scratch supports people of all ages- that includes four-year olds. Also, Scratch is indirectly responsible for the youngest users like four-year olds.
  • I have provided reasons as to why politics online can be a problem. You can read the updated post.

I respect your opinion. I'm not entirely serious about this thread, but I will continue to back it up and keep my argument afloat. Thanks for your feedback.

I think I'd semi support. I'm sick of seeing “OMG ______ IS THE STUPIDEST POLITICIAN EVER AAAAAAAAAAA” when I'm just trying to make stuff on Scratch. Though, people are allowed to express their political views if they want, but idk if Scratch is really the place.

I'm not quite done with this thread yet. I still want to rack up more “no supports”, and I have made an alternate proposal, one that you may agree with more.

“Racking up more no supports” is completely pointless, and you're wasting people's time.
