Does Firefox really use less RAM than Chrome?
would the RAM amount matter? You're talking about usage in GB, and 1 GB in 8 GB of ram is the same as 1 GB in 16 GB of ram121 tabs and 1.2GB. My browser / operating system: Windows NT 10.0, Firefox 53.0, Flash 25.0 (release 0)How much RAM do you have? It would be unfair to compare the two without testing them both with the same specs.
I've been browsing around in Firefox for the past hour. Currently I have 44 tabs open (+ 3 extensions) and it is using 3.5GB. If I had a “tab suspender” installed and suspend most of the tabs, it would probably be similar in memory usage to Chrome.
My browser / operating system: MacOS Macintosh X 10.12, Firefox 53.0, No Flash version detected

It's possible things like caching depend on the available amount of RAM?would the RAM amount matter? Does Firefox really use less RAM than Chrome?
would the RAM amount matter? You're talking about usage in GB, and 1 GB in 8 GB of ram is the same as 1 GB in 16 GB of ramI was assuming that __init__ has around 4GB RAM (and I was correct). When you have less available RAM, the OS and other software make use of it more efficiently. The OS will purge cached data that can be loaded again from disk and write other data to a swap/page file (if enabled). The browser may also do more optimisations.
Before I upgraded to 16GB (from 8GB) and got an SDD, I was constantly running low on memory and the swapping was very noticeable - switching tabs in Chrome would give me a blank page for a moment until it loaded from disk. Chrome was also less memory efficient back then.

I noticed that even with plenty of free RAM, macOS still swaps for some reason.
Technically, yes, but that doesn't really matter because it can be purged when the memory is needed by another program. It's possible things like caching depend on the available amount of RAM?but wouldn't that be considered part of the RAM usage?
