Tynker And Scratch

Scratch was made first, also tynker has some very limited special use blocks that shouldn't really be there IMO.

Id like to know from people who have actually tried both and can provide an unbiased informative report on pros and cons. I like Tynkers classroom styled lessons and rewards as well as using Minecrafts 3D engine, how does Scratch measure up here?

There is one giant difference that is all you need to know.

Scratch is free. Tynker costs money.

Since Scratch 3.0 will be released next year, there isn't much point in comparing Scratch 2.0 with Tynker. It's not the Scratch you will be using.

Of course, that's not quite true if you plan to use Scratch in the next ~290 days…

Well its Scratch 2.0 I am using right now isnt it? and scratch 3 wont be released til next year so I dont see why there cant be a comparison now. Besides I dont see any reference to a 3D engine anywhere unless I missed something.

Its great to see that Google is working on Scratch 3 and I assume that eventually they will have to build a 3D engine into Scratch at some point.

7. 3D Scratch
Scratch is a language that is designed to be as easy as possible for beginners to pick up. Adding 3D would make the language extremely complicated, and much more difficult for beginners to understand. There is a sister program to Scratch that contains 3D features, called Starlogo TNG. However, a different group has started developing a 3D version of Scratch that you can see at www.scratch3d.org. You can also try Alice, which is different from Scratch but has a bunch of stuff in common.
(aka enjoy your rubbish Tynker and learn that 3D is a gimmick in the programming world)
(oh wait 2D was a gimmick already…)

Tynker And Scratch

Hello, I am a teacher in Australia, and I have tried both tynker and scratch.
Benefits of tynker over scratch:
Tynker has support for functions, both normal and anonymous (lambdas)
Tynker Doesn't require use of flash
In tynker, Sprites can go offscreen
Scratch requires proprietary software to run

Cons of Tynker compared to scratch:
One main problem with tynker, is how slow it is. More than 10 clones can slow tynker down to an unusable state.
Tynker lessons are also useless, as they just show you what to do, and never actually teach you any concepts.
Tynker's Minecraft “Modding” is also a joke.
Tynker is designed to make money, not to teach kids how to program.
Some blocks don't even work
Tynker is so badly designed it was probably made in tynker
Tynker is proprietary software
Tynker costs money for lessons
Scratch has a much better community and support forum than tynker (The tynker support forum as a total of 1 non-administration post)

Cool thanks I appreciate the comparison, now I think I can make an informed decision.

I used to work as a special effects artist for Weta Digital so to have kids learn 3D programming at an early age is totally relevant. If kids have mastered the 2D platform then learning 3D vector math would be the next logical step.
