People have to invite you for you to join it if you are not the creator.

Hi There!

As you probably know from making your own studios, the owner of the studio can invite curators. You can ask in the comments section of the studio to become curator but you can only join a studio if a member invites you. You will get a message asking if you would like to become curator of the studio once a member has invited you.

So, basically, if you want to join a studio, ask in the comments if you could be added as a curator (however, if in the description of the studio they say not to ask, I wouldn't ask). You can follow whatever studios you want, though; while you may not be able to add projects if it's curators-only, you'll still get an update if activity occurred in the studio that day.
