That surprises me. Do you have any particular reasons for holding this opinion? I happen to prefer markdown because (for me at least) it's faster and more natural to type, and the plain text of a post tends to visually represent what the rendered output will look like.

I can think of a couple reasons for preferring BBCode though, e.g. it's more similar to HTML and perhaps easier to learn. Why do you prefer it though?

I suppose a lot of it is to do with what I'm used to. It is nice and easy to learn, and takes a lot less memory than markdown. It's easy to tell what each tags will to, since they have descriptive names.

Not to be offensive or anything, but there is still a large amount of people who don't understand how BBCode works, and adding it to another large part of the site will probably throw a lot of people off.

That's why we have those buttons above the textbox on the forums.

What will also throw people off is why comments use markdown and the forums use BBCode, if this suggestion was implemented. It would be better to be consistent across the whole site with formatting.

Not really. Comments use different emoji syntax than the forums and the world keeps turning.

emoji? The comments and forums use completely different emojis , but two different ways to italicize text in two different places on the same website would get confusing. I'm in favor of using markdown for both, or BBCode for both (or some other formatting that I don't know of).

Or we just add all the emojis everywhere.

You're just furthering my point; they're different syntax's. _commentemoji_ and :forumemoji:
So I'm sure having [b]bold[/b] and **bold** wouldn't be much of a problem.

My idea of a simpler markdown would be like word processor layout (i.e. Microsoft Word.) Those buttons saying b, i, and u would be the only real complicated things. The tags would not appear in the comments in the form of **wikipedia-like layout** or /b\this method/b\.

Other than having a simpler word processor-like layout for comments, there are two other possibilities:

Equal Markdown - Both the forums and comments could use a simpler markdown, to prevent the level of confusion you mentioned in your post, and to make the website more friendly. I would like to maintain the current BBCode format that we have now, however *cough cough* perhaps simplicity in the list tags?
No Markdown/Formatting - I could contradict my support for this suggestion and simply say we don't need markdown/additional formatting in comments. I don't think the three possibilities (BBCode, simpler markdown with difference to the forums, or simpler markdown with no difference with the forums) would be reasonable.

Hopefully this post wasn't read as rude, and if it was, please let me know. I also find the “list” tags in BBCode a bit annoying in terms of spacing.

As for the suggestion itself, I like the idea, but there should be more things than just what you mentioned. Like:
1)Strikethrough
2)Text size (Big and Small)
3)Emojis (but only

so spam is minimum)

Please also be a little bit more kinder in your posts, and not use as much CAPS (it seems like you're partially screaming and it isn't 100% mature.)

You could achieve the same thing with boldening, italicizing, underlining, and other methods.

I'm (mostly) convinced now. I hadn't considered emoji syntax before you brought it up, so I just thought it would be better to use the same formatting for comments and forums to be a bit more consistent. But I do agree that just because the comments use one formatting and the forums use another doesn't mean it's the end of the universe as we know it, if this suggestion was implemented. I'm fine with either markdown or BBCode now.

I like your idea of a simpler markdown - I don't think adding three buttons will cause a lot of confusion.

Please read my signature! It might explain some lingo that I used in my post or comment. However, not all of it shows, so you have to highlight the entire bottom of the post, from “Please read my signature!” to where it says report, and copy and paste in into a new sheet or tab or whatever.
I can't decide my signature between:
