If it can, then get that.

If it can't, I'd recommend Half-Life 1; it's better to play those games in order.

it may be a bit better to play the half life series in order but the background knowledge that half-life provides about half-life 2 is pretty minimal; i played half-life 2 and later on played half-life expecting it to offer some explanation on things like who the combine were, where they came from, and why they hold the position that they do on earth. but, alas, many details like that are left for you to either figure out on your own or read about in books and articles

HL2. If you do get more $, buy the whole Orange Box, it comes with the HL2 episodes, which follow on the story, Portal and Team Fortress 2. Great bargain.

Or wait until the Easter sale and buy all of them?
