Discuss bad school IT, obviously

I'll start: At one of my old schools, IT literally had no idea what they were doing. They installed Lightspeed MDM on school devices and yet they couldn't figure out how to use the MDM to scan the devices, and instead had to resort to sending people around to manually check them
Also I believe I got in a lot of trouble at some point for downloading Eclipse because obviously these kids are going to become dangerous haxx0rs like you see on TV when they get their hands on such bad software

Well, I exfiltrated sent to my computer about 90 GB of data a few months ago. At that time (I think they still do) they throttled TCP uploading to about 1 Mb/s.

Fortunately, they didn't throttle UDP uploading. So I just used BitTorrent Sync (now Resilio Sync) to send it over at full speed.

On a happier note, my school seems to be on the better side of school IT, because there are a few smarter students who are able to somewhat push these things around in school politics. Also, my school has a computer science department, so downloading Eclipse was actually required at one point.

On a sadder note, I was using Atom.io in its default configuration (i.e. dark theme) in the library, which caught the attention of one of the librarians who thought I was playing games.

Once, at a school I previously went to, I had Terminal open and then another student accused me of “hacking”.

Another time at the same school another student (I think it was the same one) went on a Flash game site (I think it was called “silvergames”) during a lesson. I told the teacher and then he closed the tab and deleted it from the history. The teacher looked at the history and saw nothing. And later they did it again…

I was called a hacker too, when I was messing around with inspect element (not doing much).

Most of the boys in my class play computer games while the teacher isn't looking, then they close it. Once, a teacher caught them for playing a first person shooter (halo), but they said it was a “flying game”, and somehow escaped getting in trouble. There has been lots of things going on about this halo problem, where anyone caught gets suspension. One teacher actually accepted halo, and even played multiplayer with them. That was one of the rare times I actually join in to their server and play halo.

I am the only person who knows about coding in the whole school. I think know the most about computers and coding out of the whole school of a few hundred.

This isn't about filtering systems, but at my school, in computer science, we needed to get special software for developing programs on (understandable).

Yet it's 6 weeks into the school term and we still don't have the software, which has basically meant that the teacher has had to waste 6 weeks of our lesson time

Our school is also insanely slow at installing software. I've been arguing to get Python installed for about a year now…

I'l post everything from the Scratch 3 topic by me here:

lugga wrote:

My school are genius!
They've blocked github.io but asun.co isn't blocked!
Also this keyboard is very broken!

This is ontopic because it means I can only use the asun.co scratch things and not the officialones.
So I'll try out this on an i3 laptop with a brokeen keyboard.

I also don't like thesound because when I'm at home my computer and chrome are always on max volume so when I forget it makes sound I end up being scared half to death and deafened at the same time. I hope when the officialrealease is brought out sound can be permanently disabled.

I also think it would be nice to be able to splice vertical and horizontal together using like a angle block.

An i3 can run it at 60fps nicely with only a few slight drops when n dragging blocksand deleting them.

Offtopic - This keyboard is really broken

lugga wrote:

I should clarify, they don't know what github.io is.
(It's blocked as unclassified, only certain subdomains on github.io are unblocked)

lugga wrote:

Also they blocked duckduckgo!
I may have been watching youtube through duckduckgo.
But then youtubeunblock isn't blocked…

lugga wrote:

I also have no idea why your site isn't blocked.
I mean no offense by this, but the site isn't the most popular site.

I'll probably email tech support.

(They are actually called IT Support but their ability is ‘unblock websites’ and say “Did you turn it off and on again”)

My primary school said that if I got a website during the time I was there and tried to access it inside of school I would be referred to a different school because of ‘breaches to networth security’. And then comes along secondary school and I email tech support to unblock it and within 1 hour it's done.

Yeah people get crazy over security.

A kid got detention for using a ‘matrix’ batch file.
Which apparently I'm the only one who knows how to make…

lugga wrote:

Also who else has doen the code.org ‘hour of code’?
I was ommitted from the lesson in primary to do java instead and when done then I would help the class!
It felt so sad having people ask how they make flappy bird do a random sound…
(It was in a dropdown)

Also the hour of code on code.org uses blockly.
IT'S A HORRIBLE MESS OF BRIGHT HAPPY COLOURS!

The websites literally http://code.org

Also I found a link on that website to a bad reputation website a year ago (I think it's fixed)

Also by java I mean say what code does in the most simple way ever…

Also my form tutor thinks I'm doing homework right now

Well, we have quite strong IT, and apparently we will learn about HTML next year

Oh, and we are learning about how to make a maze game in Scratch this year

Anyway, whenever I do *any* programming, somebody will go “You're hacking”, I will respond, “Yes” to try and scare them off.

And school blocking seems pretty good. I can get around some of the things using https://crossorigin.me/ so thanks so much technoboy!

The school I go to the wifi is owned by the school district and they control everything. The reasons why they block the websites are hilarious because on the site it shows why it was blocked. Here are some of the quote end quote reasons:

Communication (apparently they do not want us to communicate)
Informational (do not even have to say anything about this)
Photo Sharing (Sorry media club)
Services (again I have nothing to say about this)

And a bunch of other reasons… Just cannot remember them atm.

Also you may say install a proxy.. Well I have one but chromebooks suck and the proxy breaks chrome and I do not think it is the proxies falt.

Also Google made their own spyware for chromebooks that my school uses but they cannot (yet) control my computer.

Funny thing is to fix all of these problems simply install Linux.

Also the teacher have macs (so jealous) and they all installed proxies (even the teacher that is there to enforce the tech rules of the school district) so guess that rule does not apply to us

Because JS is the future (echos) future future futur futu fut fu f

@lugga
What are the contents of cmd.bat?

Also, MS powershell isn't blocked…

Lol that's hilarious. What were you doing anyways? Did you get in trouble for it?

If the history was cleared, doesn't that make it obvious they are hiding something?

Wow. Those things can be taught at a much faster pace…

Even scratch? Also, technically all programming is hacking, as all it is is making clever solutions to get around things…

I did the same thing.

1) ik. But we were learning to make a Maze Game. And now we have finished the “programming topic” of ICT.

2)
2a) No, not Scratch, because it looks less like the propaganda that you see on TV
2b) Haha, yeah I guess

3) Lol yeah

in my school there is literally no security around computers. none. And it's awesome.
and we can just do whatever in lessons (trough not doing what you should won't give you good grades).
I once while the teacher was in the class made a simple thing that opened random exes as fast as possible. The teacher didn't care. xD

Did the teacher care when you sent it to their computer?

I'd love to be in your school xD
The beauty of school computers is that you don't care what happens to them
Today I tried making a simple batch file that infinitely creates a directory then changes to that directory. Unfortunately access was denied

My school don't block powershell either
also here is the source code of cmd.bat
@echo off
:cmd
set /p cmd=%cd%
%cmd%
goto cmd

They also didn't block the microsoft store when they first got windows 10 so a kid downloaded Minecraft Windows 10 Edition in class…
…Then got their account hacked
