Blue screen of death

I downloaded the scratch offline editor but every time I open it, I get the blue screen of death. I re-downloaded it but the same thing would happen. I noticed that the computer crashed every time it tried to open the “help files”. What is it?

@DeltaLimp if this is a school computer then I'd recommend telling the principal to upgrade from Windows XP
If this is a home computer you might also want to switch to a newer version of Windows
Windows XP is not safe to use these days and isn't compatible with most softwares

Not unusual..

..still ≈10% of all computers run it. That's a few million.

Windows XP is as stable as Windows 7. There is nothing wrong with using Windows XP in 2016, and when people say that “it's not secure” doesn't mean anything, all you need to do is get a good antivirus.

All you need to do is get a good antivirus, then your computer is safe. It doesn't really depend on what version of Windows you use.

why do you always oppose my arguments?
Most antivirus softwares are not compatible with Windows XP
Also, what version of Windows you're using depends. Newer versions usually are more stable and are more secure

wrong
Windows XP is no longer supported. no more security patches and updates will be released for Windows XP
there are so many reasons why Windows XP is not secure

okay
Where did you download the editor? Also, have you checked that your system is compatible?

I don't want to add to the argument about Windows XP, but it actually doesn't seem to be compatible with the offline version of Scratch 2.0. I found this on another old topic:

You can try downloading Scratch 1.4, although I'd hardly call it a great substitute.

The Scratch 2 download page wrote:

If you have an older computer, or cannot install the Scratch 2.0 offline editor, you can try installing Scratch 1.4.

Sorry, I'm afraid I can't be of any more help than that.

This is correct, Scratch 2.0 does not support Windows XP
You'll have to try 1.4 or upgrade to windows 7/8/10
