I actually am in favor of this idea. Current ISO standards use set symbols instead of Americanized symbols using words and different pictures for the same thing. Doing this idea helps encourage use for people who don't speak English (as translation is somewhat an issue), and most kids may be somewhat illiterate. Pictures are pretty easy to remember and recognize.
If kids are illiterate then how would they read the text on the blocks?

Sigton
You forgot? Kids that are illiterate can use the horizontal way of programming in scratch 3 because that uses icons. By the way, this idea is meant to be in S3
It would actually look better in Scratch 2.0 not 3.0, and I don't like Scratch 3.0's design. It looks like Windows 8.
What you saw is the BLOCK ENGINE of S3. Have you seen scratchblocks? It's a engine of the blocks. Don't be mean

For the users who say it would make things look crowded:
I found this picture on the Scratch Wiki, so it probably wouldn't look crowded.

I'm not being mean, and yes, that is the block engine of Scratch 3.0, but it is the block engine that will be used, and it looks like Windows 8. I don't like Windows 8.

You mean, metro? No beautiful style? Explain what you mean. And yes, I also kinda hate Windows 8…

Yes, metro/super modern cool ‘2016" 1337 flat design style. (also known as the new Scratch homepage ) I really don’t like it.

I like the idea for the icons. It might be more friendly to younger kids.

You're welcome! Maybe the looks one could be a picture of a piece of clothing, and events could be a picture of a flag. Pen could be a picture of a pen.

That's good! I kinds planned the looks category to be an eye, but that makes more sense!

I think the “Sensing” category should be an eye.
Here is a list of what the icons could be.
Motion: a guy running
Looks: picture of a piece of clothing
Sound: a speaker
Pen: a pen
Events: a flag
Control: a lever or switch
Sensing: an eye
Variables: a picture of a variable
Lists: a picture of a list
Operators: a calculator
More blocks: a plus sign?

(By the way Variables and Lists are different categories because I think they should be separate categories in Scratch 3.0. But if they just stay in the Data category, then Data could be binary code)

Thank you! Maybe sound could be a picture of the button in the sound editor you can click on to go to the Sound Library.

(Got ninjad by dude341 for the idea of the speaker thing.)

Also, the menus at the top could have icons. File would be a text file icon, Edit could be a text file icon with a pencil, Tips could be a question mark, and About could be a speech bubble.

If kids are illiterate then how would they read the text on the blocks?

They use ScratchJr, maybe?

OK, but i think it's good to have the icons on by default, and can be turned off, mobile or not (It is a good idea to have icons so that mobiles will have bigger touch)
How would this be enabled/disabled? Through the editor or account settings?

EDIT: If you're concerned about design, you might want to check out what Scratch 3.0 looks like first
