Why is it called an "original meme"?

All I see is dancing animal OCs. No image macros, no Rick Harrison, no Harambe, no SpongeGar or Doge or Dat Boi….how can these claim to be “memes” when they clearly feature no memes whatsoever?

Also there's an inherent irony in saying “original meme,” when the word meme actually comes from the Greek mimēma, to imitate.

For context:
These are so-called “original memes”

For reference, these are actual memes:

It might be a good idea to post some here so people will have context.

Just search “meme”: https://scratch.mit.edu/search/projects?q=meme

Why is it called an "original meme"?

I had/ve quite a few friends who created “ORIGINAL MEMEs” on YouTube. According to them, and a bit of research I did myself, the term is actually MeMe- but the fact that people started capitalizing the entire title pretty much caused everyone to forget about that, lol.

I think it's safe to assume that we're talking about entirely different things here

A “meme” is just something that spreads over the internet or one website semi quickly. (Like dat boi) most people seem to think that the only “memes” are dumb looking pictures with stupider captions.

So why do people make pictures of dancing cats or whatever and say “oh I made a new meme lol”

That doesn't answer my question

What was your question then. Also, even if somebody makes a oc meme, it hits off pretty quick sometimes, as it did, it is now a meme. A meme is not just things like dat boi and doge.

I did, all I saw was “how are these memes” and I answered.

The question is, “How are those memes ‘original,’ if memes are, by definition, imitations?”

Icey29 answered that the animation kind of meme is actually “MeMe,” but the meaning was distorted.

Yes, memes thrive on being copied. If each of these “original meme” projects is, in fact, “original,” then none of them are memes.

Well, every meme has to start somewhere. I guess that those scratchers are hoping that their projects become a meme.

They just want to start a meme that many people would like to appreciate. However, I do agree that those dancing anime cats are overused and we need to use something like Sonic characters and funny animals.

A perfect example

Well, I somewhat get it now, although the meaning of meme is really distorted now. I think that when they saw ORIGINAL MEME it means that nobody on the website used the sound for the meme yet.

Probably just as a quick random example because they like Sonic and that's the first thing that came to their mind.

PPL, I do agree with you. Idk why anime cats are dominating the Scratch community by like ten to one. I mean it's not really a problem, but there has to be a reason why

Here's why, brethren:
Cats are accessible.
People like cats.
They're easy to draw.
Most find them cute.
They're the Internet's mascot animal.
People like to jump on the bandwagon.

It isn't calculus.

We can make it into calculus… but nobody wants that
