Balance your Idea

Got a suggestion? Great! Now just go to the show and tell forum and post it. Easy! Actually, the aftermath is the hard part. Most of the time, a lot of scratchers will not like your idea and pound it into the ground. Guess what: I've had at least fifteen suggestions of mine pounded into the ground, not ONE ever made it to the final cut, even the ones with good feedback. So, are you wondering what this page is for? Well, got a suggestion? Well, this is the forum for you! Well, not to POST your idea in, but to be able to look at your idea from someone else's point of view.

First of all, remember that no idea is too small, but an idea too big probably won't make it. For the forum, we're going to use an example idea:

We should have scratch for 3D! It will be so awesome and everyone will love it and more...

Ok, I'll tell you now that at least fifty people came up with this same idea. Probably hundreds. Maybe thousands. So here's the first step: Search the forum and make sure no one posted the same idea. If someone did, post on their forum that you had their idea and you support! Well, if you support the fact that they should make scratch 3D.

What's good and bad about your idea? This is a very important part. To get a better look at your suggestion, create a chart listing pros and cons. What are pros and cons? Well, pros are goods and cons are bads. I created a chart here to get a look at the 3D suggestion:

Pros Cons
More games Complex
More ideas Not 2D
3D is awesome Hard to master
Better flexibility Laggy

Ok, so we've got four pros and four cons. It's an equal number, but that doesn't mean the idea is good or bad. First, you have to look at the cons. If they are too heavy, the suggestion could cause Scratchers to drop out if they implemented it. So, here's the thing: 2D is easier to use, it doesn't lag, it's better to make main menus, and simple. 2D doesn't have so many cons, except for the fact that it isn't 3D. In 3D, the cons are so heavy that the pros can collapse. I mean, who wants to convert scratch to the next C++? Not me, as a matter of fact.

Also, if you've came up with an idea and used all these checkers, there is still something that's needed: Good layout. And Detail. Let's say, for some reason, the 3D idea is actually good. What if you just bang on the keyboard saying “Hey we need 3D in scratch!” that's not going to get you anywhere. It is recommended that you create some pictures and mockups to show what your idea would look like on scratch. Also, you have to provide detail on how you think it should be.

And there you have it! Check your idea before you post, and you'll be good to go. I used these steps myself to balance my idea, and it got positive feedback, but that doesn't mean it made the final cut. One more thing: There is no way around getting negative feedback. If your idea gets popular, you're most likely that you will get these kinds of comments, but just keep going and the idea will probably be considered!

Don't forget that sometimes people don't use advice like this and actually make it! If you do have a wacky idea, don't hesitate to post it, you'll never know who will say yes!

Here is another page that also shows how to balance your suggestion.
