What is a ban/block, and how can I be banned?

A ban, also known as a block, is when the Scratch Team decides to disallow a user or IP address/range from accessing the Scratch Website. Bans are issued when users behave inappropriately, make disrespectful actions to others, flame, troll, bully, post links to commercial websites, or do anything generally considered ‘bad’ or against the Community Guidelines for a continuous amount of time.

The four types of bans
There are four types of bans, ranking from least to worst:
- Sharing ban
A sharing ban occurs when the user has repeatedly post projects and comments that go against the guidelines. This ban prevents the user from making comments, editing their profile, changing project titles, and sharing projects, while still allowing the user to log in. It's miserable.
- Account ban
An account ban occurs when the Scratcher has continually done something against the Community Guidelines on their account. This is the most common type of ban.
- IP ban
IP bans are normally used when a user creates alternate accounts in order to get around an account ban. The IP ban prevents access on the network that has the banned IP, preventing the Scratcher from using a different account to continue their trouble. However, this does not stop the user since this can be evaded by using proxies or changing the IP address. Bugs have been reported that the IP ban can make users that are innocent to become unexpectedly banned.

There is one more type of ban, that is only used on the Scratch Wiki:
- Wiki ban
A wiki ban occurs when a Scratch Wiki editor continually posts something rude or mature, or vandalizes the Wiki. However, this ban is exceedingly rare, because all users on the Wiki must request accounts and there are fairly high standards to receive one.

How to get unbanned
If you are banned you must appeal to get unbanned. Here's the Scratch Wiki's opinion on appealing:

On the Scratch Website, when a user is banned, he/she must contact the Scratch Team to explain what he/she did and promise that he/she will behave properly in the future. Upon receiving the message, the Scratch Team may decide either to set the ban to expire or take no action. If the ban is set to expire, it is usually set to 3.5 days the first time the user is banned, and double that time for each subsequent ban. If the Scratch Team decides to take no action, then they will respond with a message saying why the user will not be unbanned.

So, try not to get banned, kids! I've been banned, and it sucks!

Banning Controversy
Welp, I can't really explain this, so let's let the Scratch Wiki save me again.

Some users complain about Scratch Team unfairly banning people. Although there are occasionally misunderstandings and mistakes made by Scratch Team, this is usually not the case. Sometimes, if a popular Scratcher is banned, Scratchers may create studios and projects asking for the Scratch Team to unblock them. These are usually deleted by the Scratch Team for spreading drama in the community, or because the users may not know the full story. Other times, the Scratcher themselves may use another account to get around their block. This usually results in an IP ban.

FAQ about bans
- What is a block?
A block is the same thing as a ban
- Is there such thing as a “Forum Ban?”
Bans on the forums, or “Forum Bans”, were once implemented in Scratch 1.4, although they are not in this version of Scratch. Here's what the Scratch Wiki has to say about what they were:

Most bans on the Scratch Forums occurred when a user either often sparked flame wars or posted links to commercial websites. Bans on the forums were rarer than on the Scratch website, as far fewer users used the forums than the main website, but could be equally bad. Both the Scratch Team and Community Moderators could ban users on the forums.

- Is there any way to get around a ban?
Technically there is, by creating another account with a different IP address and a different confirmation email, but both me and the ST trust you to not try and get around a ban, because this resets the ban time.
- I have another question.

You are still able to share projects and edit “About Me” and “What I'm Working On” But you cannot post comments or post in the forums.
