this is actually kind of an ironic occurrence for me to witness rn on the forums bc i just finished a really sad anime yesterday (idk if anyone has recommended it here yet) called Your lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso) and it's literally the most tearjerking piece of media i've ever seen. but it also has the other criteria you asked for: there are some really funny parts, and it's sweet as a whole.

as for sad material specifically, if you want to cry for hours, then this is the series for you; in fact, you may cry for days (i'm still recovering from it personally). but don't expect tears instantly; it's a slow and deep progression that sets itself up perfectly to have you bawling your eyes out when the later episodes kick in.

if you're considering watching it, to avoid spoilers, i'd recommend just not looking it up at all. it's basically about this teenage piano prodigy named Kousei Arima who stopped playing the piano a couple years back due to a traumatizing event (i'm not gonna tell you what it is, but don't worry if it gets spoiled for you because it's part of the exposition), but he meets a violinist named Kaori Miyazono, who encourages him to take up the piano again. it has a fair deal of music terminology and it doesn't really sound like a tearjerker at first, but just trust me: it's really sad.

Eva. Oh wait you arent talking about that kind of sad. Believe it or not Pokémon has some sad stuff. Though they are more movies I heard Studio Ghilbi. Curse of the White Witch is basically a Studio Ghilbi vidoo game.

Cory in the House. I almost cried when Cory was seemingly crushed under the remains of the White House after an epic battle with Donald Trump.

The Emoji Movie. This anime is a wonderful emotional rollercoaster that will make you both cry and laugh. I couldn't recommend it enough.

I Would Recommend It

You should watch Ducktales. This anime is top percentage. The saddest part was when Scrooge McDuck was about to lose all his money and his health to the demonic Donald Duck. Also when the frog was taking flight, hoping to become the first frog in space, ended up misjudging his calculations and ended up stranded in the sky. 420% would recommend it.

Demon slayer. its about a young boy who lives on a hill with his family and is like, their source of money from his job, but then one day, he comes home to find all of his family dead! Murdered by demons! except for his sister of course, because obviously she is turned into a demon! hooray!

The anime Orange. I've only read the Manga but holy heck it's sad! It's about a boy who commits suicide. Then his friends send time-traveling letters to themselves so they'll get a second chance to have a happy life with him. This may seem confusing, but this is really sad and tragic. But it's also my favorite manga.
