A solution to "Naming and Shaming"

[removed by mod] remixed my project. It was a exact copy and there was no credit given. I tried asking [removed by mod] to give me credit, but he would not. Instead, he flatly refused, and said in the project notes “Do not ask for credit”. So, [removed by mod] is claiming ownership of my project! What should I do?

[mod note- Please don't use usernames when reporting problems in the forums. Instead, just use the reporting feature.]

Note: This post is fake and composed by the topic owner. However, credit to scimonster for the “editing” style.

Looks familiar to all of you who have been on the forums, right? Well, this sample post shows a post which contained something common, naming and shaming. (Naming and shaming is when a scratcher reports a problem in the forums and uses specific names. Doing so can attract negative attention.)

So, now, I have a solution to that!

Here is my solution:

Right now, the Community Guidelines say this:
Be respectful. When sharing projects or posting comments, remember that people of many different ages and backgrounds will see what you’ve shared.

Be constructive. When commenting on other’s projects, say something you like about it and offer suggestions.

Share. You are free to remix projects, ideas, images, or anything else you find on Scratch – and anyone can use anything that you share. Be sure to give credit when you remix.

Keep personal info private. For safety reasons, don't use real names or post contact info like phone numbers or addresses.

Help keep the site friendly. If you think a project or comment is mean, insulting, too violent, or otherwise inappropriate, click “Report” to let us know about it.

Now my suggestion is to add another guideline, which could look like this:
Be respectful. When sharing projects or posting comments, remember that people of many different ages and backgrounds will see what you’ve shared.

Be constructive. When commenting on other’s projects, say something you like about it and offer suggestions.

Share. You are free to remix projects, ideas, images, or anything else you find on Scratch – and anyone can use anything that you share. Be sure to give credit when you remix.

Keep personal info private. For safety reasons, don't use real names or post contact info like phone numbers or addresses.

Don't name and shame. When reporting problems in the forums, don't use specific names as it can attract negative attention.

Help keep the site friendly. If you think a project or comment is mean, insulting, too violent, or otherwise inappropriate, click “Report” to let us know about it.

Note: The suggested guideline is in blue text.

Currently, there is a Scratch etiquette about this, but it is found in the wiki. Most new scratchers don't know about the wiki (like I did when I first joined a year ago), and would not see the etiquette. They think that the Community Guidelines is all the rules. But naming and shaming has become a very common problem, and most scratchers do it without knowing that it is not allowed. They end up with a post very similar to the sample post I put above. That would not be fair as they did not know the rules in the first place and end up with a edit and a moderator note on their post.

Or, there could just be a forum guideline, with the “No Naming and Shaming” rule. (credit to jvvg, I got inspired to make a suggestion about forum guidelines).

So, that is why I suggest this. Since it is a common problem, it should be added to the Community Guidelines to prevent “Naming and Shaming” before it happens. Thoughts?

I think that instead of putting that in the CG, we should have the basic CG (which are just to give a general idea of what's ok) and a more specific list of what's allowed and what's not. The reason behind that is that if we put everything like that in the CG, it would be fairly long (e.g. don't spam, don't necropost, use appropriate language, don't post duplicate topics, and so on and so forth). However, if we have the CG and a specific list of rules, that would probably work better.

I also believe that some people on the Wiki are working on doing just that. I think they are making a full list of rules there.

Yes, this would be a good idea.

My signature was a really funny gif of Red wiggling her eyebrows, but I left it for a few months and it got taken down. Pity.

YYYAAAYYY!!! BTW, thanks for showing your mod edits when editing posts, I decided to use your style of editing someone's post in my sample post of naming, (found in post #1).
