Yeah I love it! Profile backgrounds would be a new and interesting way to design your profile.

Why do people say “It's not strictly necessary!” though? I mean, the “Featured Project” box isn't necessary either. Neither is profile commenting (we didn't have that in 1.4), or love-its, or studios, or the Scratch Forums, or “move 10 steps”, but those are useful and fun things so we keep them around.

I agree, however, there are some problems that need to be worked out before something like this could be implemented.

There's really no accounting for taste. Someone could use an inappropriate image, but that could be prevented in the same way we prevent other inappropriate images, by reporting them. What I'm more worried about is neon colors, horrendously ugly pictures, pixelation beyond belief, and memes. Oh god the memes. There'd be thousands of them, rage comics and trumpet playing skeletons as far as the eye can see. I can deal with a small profile pic, those I can mostly tune out, but I really don't want to be visually assaulted every time I visit the wrong profile, especially considering how pretty the rest of the site's layout is.

I'm an advocate of functional minimalism. If a feature has definite value and function while keeping it simple (Featured project, profile pictures, comments, love-its, studios, forums) it should be implemented and kept. I see no extra value or function from this suggestion that profile pictures and profile descriptions don't already serve.
I hope I could answer all of your queries, and I hope that we can agree on this. :)
Exactly. Finally, someone says it!
People use “neon colors, horrendously ugly pictures” (for trolling reasons) “pixelation beyond belief, and memes” in the places as follows: profile pictures, signatures, project thumbnails, studio thumbnails, and too many other things to count. I think you're asking for a bit too much there, buddy. If you can drag your limping carcass across Scratch seeing these loathsome images, then you can tolerate one more source.
Where, when you go to someone's profile, do you see a giant, welcoming image that describes all of what you do on Scratch? It's a fairly big image, isn't it? You could fit most, if not all of what you wanted people to know about you in that tremendous space you have on the first thing people see on your profile.

That's a good point, however, with the exception of signatures (Something that many new scratchers don't know how to use) all of those are small images, thumbnails, etc. A huge banner/background is a completely different and much bigger menace
I agree that it'd be a cool idea, I like the ability to be artsy and individual. However like I said, I just feel that the gains in utility and appearance are outweighed by the losses.

Thanks for being civil about it though, I love a good debate

Most NS don't even know how to get profile pictures, I'm sad to say it. Of course, they figure that out after a while. Why can't that be the same as with the background? It'd probably happen at the same time, too. They're in the same spot. If not, the background would've been discovered easier, as the only way you can find out how to change your profile picture is by scrolling over it, making the box show “change”. Also, it may be bigger, but like you said, signatures are big (and as you described it, menacing) but they figure it out eventually, either by just asking someone with a siggy, or by some other source.
If you don't mind, I'm too dumb to comprehend, what are we losing my doing this?
I do too. I jumped with excitement when I just found someone else who knew the much easier to read color technique, even though most people I know spell it “colour” XD My computer always misspelled underlines it in red when I try to spell it that way!

Semi-Support.

Bad Stuff:

It's not needed. Profiles are already customizable.

It will ruin the profiles pretty look.

Good Stuff:

It will help people find others with the same intrests.

But you should be able to dazzle the onlookers and let them know who you are by showing them what you do on our home of Scratch by using a tremendous piece of craft.

What pretty look? I see writing, and then white. Plain old white. Hey, that kind of reminds me of the place where you sit in a mental hospital with a straitjacket on. Hint: Mental hospital. XD
Good stuff:
Well yeah, that's a good point. :-)

Well, I wasn't really meaning it in a bad way xD What I mean is that it's probably better that many scratchers don't have signatures and such, at least in my opinion as a minimalist :P
The clean simple look of the profile page, and possibly our sanity depending on how much comic sans is used in the backgrounds xD

XD Yeah, imagine what some strange minds might put in their siggy if they knew it existed… Like some two year old would come on and have their OC a discount Dora. Wait, what if siggies were optional? Oh gosh, I just started a whole new Suggestions forum, didn't I. Darnit.
I agree the profile page could get a bit confusing for NS, but like I said earlier, it would probably be less confusing and easier to find than the profile picture. And, as for the actual simple look, well… Let's just say that half of Scratch has turned into DeveiantArt (meaning that half of the people here base their accounts, or have at least a good deal of art) so I don't really think that it'd be a problem for another source of showing off your art to appear. Well, I say that, even the majority of Scratchers have art in their siggies, profile pictures, ect. Art makes them stand out more, or this could even be used for advertising. Also, do you know how crazy the shops would be for this? There would be such an increase in art orders that I don't even think that the shops could handle. Also, if you know how to highlight white words or see this when you quote, I recently upgraded my profile GIF. It's essentially the same, but with my current style, and it flashes like lightning when the wolf howls. But I kept this hidden because I didn't want to get called out for being off topic. Hey, we were talking about making art and shops and all the stuff, right? XD

Where would this profile cover be displayed? If it's the background, wouldn't it cause problems on different-sized browser windows? Also, is there a minimum size for the covers? Are gifs allowed? What if the profile cover is too small? Would there be a default profile cover?

I'm was imagining more of something similar to Google+ where it only shows at the top of the page and maybe it can also be shown on forum posts.

Anyways, support for profile covers and possibly more ways to customize our profiles because it allows us to express our creativity in more ways and have more control over our accounts and easily recognize a user.

Also, maybe this can replace signatures, though it would limit places for advertisements.

Well it's true that scratch has turned into somewhat of a deviantart for younger kids, I don't really think that's what the ST should be striving for xD First and foremost scratch is about programming, and the art is just a plus :P Looks nice! You might consider going with vector though, considering that your profile pic is mostly straight lines or curves, vector would be perfect for it. And plus it compresses better into GIF form

Support. Scratch is a coding, sharing, learning, and chatting kids site. Imagine Scratch without comments, loves, faves, follows, accounts, forums, remixes, sharing projects in general, contacts, and funny locations. That would make the motto “Imagine, program”, which is not exciting.
