Just a question...[display name different from user name]
I know how you can't change your username because it'll confuse people… but I have an idea. Maybe everyone could have a “display”name, like it shows up on your profile, your discussion forum posts, etc. (and you can change it), but under your display name, it shows your username so no one will get confused. And on profile links, it shows the username and not the display name. So pretty much it's like a little “nickname” to go with your username. The username will still stay (you log in with it, etc.). I'm only suggesting a little “display name.” If you could add this to Scratch, I know a lot of people will cheer up; I know a lot of people who don't like their usernames, like my friend @destinyrose99, and would most likely create a display name if you added this feature. (so technically the display name is a second, changeable username)

i don't think that's true, do you have sources? The servers couldn't handle it. That's the main reason they can't change usernames…
if you can store projects with images in them, i don't think having a display name would be too much for the servers to handle.

Well i can say one thing about this suggestion, it won't require changing the architecture But it will require a new name system to run alongside the original system.
Also, the original name should only be displayed on the profile of the user as to not make the new name system redundant. I suppose i support.

The username is already a display name.

First, they would need a system that would move all the projects over to that username. Second all the comments would have to be moved. Forum posts as well.i don't think that's true, do you have sources? The servers couldn't handle it. That's the main reason they can't change usernames…

Plus, it would be confusing.

Wait, I think I understand what you're saying. For example, on Wattpad, there is an option to add your real name (or nickname) on your profile, but if you don't choose to, it stays the same as your username.
I support this. Also, the original name should only be displayed on the profile of the user as to not make the new name system redundant. I suppose i support.

No Support.
1. It will still get confusing.
2. The servers coudn't handle it. That's the main reason they don't let you change your username.
3. It burries problems instead of fixing them.
4. You didn't explain enough of how it would work.

This person is suggesting changing the display name, not the real username in the Scratch database, which the servers actually (probably) totally could handle.

Yes, I'm suggesting an extra display name for each profile, so your username still stays, like @TheAwesomeMaster and @kvakkvack said. So… wouldn't ST just have to add a display name instead of moving everything over? Wouldn't the servers be able to handle it? And anyway, lots of other sites have it, I was wondering if they could add it to Scratch, because I know loads of people who dislike their usernames.

yes display name would be different than username, that is what makes this suggestion easy to implement. i don't think you understand what is being suggested or you may not understand how websites function.Display name is different from username.First, they would need a system that would move all the projects over to that username. Second all the comments would have to be moved. Forum posts as well.i don't think that's true, do you have sources? The servers couldn't handle it. That's the main reason they can't change usernames…

all that would be required is a system that replaces all instances of the username with a display name. and then of course a system in user settings that allows you to change your display name.
the url for the users profile would stay the same. No Support.
1. It will still get confusing.
i don't think this would be very confusing at all if the url stays the same which it generally does with display name systems.
also maybe a hover could be added so when you hover over a display name for a user it shows their actual username.
they are not suggestion a system that lets you change your username, so that point is invalid. 2. The servers coudn't handle it. That's the main reason they don't let you change your username.
and also i don't think that is true anyways, the main problem is that it would make moderating a pain (which this system would override because it is a display name not an actual username). like i said before i may be wrong so it would be nice if you post sources.
i don't really understand what you mean. i don't think they are suggesting to bury any problems. display names is a common thing on most websites, the ability to change your username is not. 3. It burries problems instead of fixing them.
i think that is a pretty poor reason to not welcome a suggestion, if there is anything specific you didn't understand it would be more beneficial to ask for more detail on the subject. 4. You didn't explain enough of how it would work.
