It's free until you decide to pay for it (jk, I should pay for mine sooner or later)
Why wouldn't you want it because it's not free (as in speech)?

Haha.
But sublime text isn't free, both as in speech and in price, so I refuse to use it.
Frankly I don't care OS X isn't “free,” and neither is Sublime, but they both work really well for me so they're what I use

I know that I can just use it in evaluation mode for free forever, but to me if I'm not going to pay for it (and I never would, I have better thing to spend $70 on), it's the same as stealing it.

Because open source is awesome.

Same but with Windows xD

Don't get me wrong, I do plan to pay for it… some day…
But if I pay today or in ten years, I'll still get the same use out of it no matter what.

Lately, I've been using vim. It has none of the needless clutter and bloat of GUI and it is so much faster!

Why is Atom so laggy anyways? I've never used it because I keep hearing about how laggy it is.

How in the world can a text editor, of ALL things, be laggy? Is this what the world has come to?

It could be due to people not caring about performance, and caring more about using trendy Javascirpt libraries to program their text editors, idk. Kids these days.
Because it uses Electron, which is a node library for making applications with web technologies
So it's essentially a web app packaged as a desktop application.
But then it includes a boatload of features because why not, which makes it _even slower_

Visual Studio Code I hear is a lot faster than Atom, and also has a lot of cool features.

Lately I've been using a magnetized needle and a steady hand. It doesn't require a silly monitor, and it's what real programmers use!

Although for real I use IDLE.

IDLE's pretty good. The only reason that I don't use it is that it doesn't have syntax highlighting for languages other than Python and its multi-file project support is non-existent

(did you mean “doesn't have syntax highlighting for languages other than Python”?)
Yeah. I use Notepad++ for nearly everything else.
My priority of editors goes like this:

Use an official IDE.
No official ones? Use any IDE.
No good ones/IDE doesn't exist? Use Notepad++.
Notepad++ not working for some reason? Use the system editor.
System editor is just plain garbage? Use vim.
Don't have vim? Use nano.
Don't have nano? Give up now before you try carving your data into stone tablets.

I'm just messing around with you! If you do want to switch, I suggest an Ubuntu variant but not Ubuntu itself because it's not much better than Windows! You probably don't want to get an advanced system now because it's a bit of a shock. So much configuration just to get X working.

It's basically a whole web browser in a text editor.

No.

Emacs is nice as a working environment, but neovim is my pick for actual, ultra-efficient text-editing out-of-the-box (although I'm configuring emacs on my grandfather's Lubuntu PC ).

You can even run a virtual terminal in neovim alongside a split window!
