scratch should have a mute button because someIt is easy. Go to Sound Mixer on Windows. Turn your Scratch tab's volume all the way down. Done.

You can already do this. Just go to the scratch tab and click on the little megaphone thing. Or just exit a project that has sound. Or go in to the project and place a stop all sounds block. All these will stop the noise.

Scratch already has this feature, believe it or not! Hold Ctrl (command on a Mac) while clicking the green flag, and a project will run muted.

On some browsers, you can mute the tab. Or, as mentioned above by Ninkancho, you can hold control/command and click the green flag as if you are running the project in turbo mode.

Scratch already has this feature, believe it or not! Hold Ctrl (command on a Mac) while clicking the green flag, and a project will run muted.
Nope. doesn't work.
Most browsers will come with a “mute” option for a specific tab. Semi-Support.

No support - you can mute the tab by control clicking the flag or muting the tab like this in Firefox (works for Chrome aswell, might work for Safari)
And before someone asks and gets off-topic, I changed my Firefox theme, so that's why it might not look like yours.
